The new map is huge, no doubt. However, there are three main lanes to consider. Either you drive up the middle (don’t warp) and secure the middle rock structure, or you go to the outside to one of the two warp stations. Personally, I like the size because it prevents clustering of enemy forces at certain points. I find that most of the maps we have now are bottlenecked and can be won by sheer survivability and dps. This map, however, requires coordination. So yes. If a WHOLE team goes frigate, or any specific class for that matter, they have a high chance of success if they stick together.
I played a CR game with Sephirothsk, who was captain, and we originally waited behind our dome. We noted that the enemy was coming in waves around the edges of the dome, and since it’s so far to the middle, they were getting wiped out. Eventually, they pushed hard enough to break our lines, and we warped to one of the mid-way warp stations on the outer edge of the map. After, we held off wave after wave of enemy assault and ended up winning the game. Honestly, Seph and I were confused as to how we didn’t get overwhelmed at such a critical location, but there were two main factors. First, our team was grouped into two strong forces: one with Seph and one inside the dome. This was nice because it prevented enemies from warping in behind us, as we were equal in strength on both fronts. Second, their team was not sticking together at all when we advanced. They stopped warping and flew directly from their dome, and were then ripped to shreds by our gauss cannons and missiles. We also had an Engie at both fronts.
My point is, we probably would have lost unless the team reacted the way they did. We stuck together (within both squadrons), we called out our targets, and we were more efficient and precise. To win this map, you must stick with your team. You cannot hope to penetrate your way into the enemy dome without the help of your comrades, as the map is too large for anyone to help you quickly if you get into trouble.
I really do like the new map, though; it will take some getting used to, but this is the type of map that I have been waiting for. Something big enough to prevent spawn camping, controlled enough to allow for organized teamplay, and unique enough to challenge new playing styles.
I say that we give it some time; I really do think that it will change several things about the way the game is played, in a good way.
