Star Citizen

SupCom looks interesting for me as a now casual rts player, because it just looks like more fun. I dare to say however any SC hardcore gamer would laugh at the proposition, that it is a better RTS, offering “hundreds of different units”. Yeah. Because Balance. For sure.

You misunderstand. The thing is, SC2 is hardly a strategy game. You make some decisions, yeah, but it’s mostly an X counters Y, and the emphasis very-very hard on the execution. Those hundreds are actually not that much, because you have a ton of units that are the same, no matter your faction (factions have much less differences than in Blizzard “RTSs”).

However since you seem to be fans of it, SupCom or SupCom 2?

The second seems a bit different, judging after youtube.

SupCom2 is a disgrace to the name, dumbed down for console use. SupCom is actively patched btw, look for Forged Alliance Forever.

Strategy is defined by a long term plan how to act and react. You make tons of tactical decisions later, but you still follow your strategy, which as I have said, is a lot more in SC2 about correct openings, build orders, or tech combinations. Basic “X counters Y” is mostly the way you play as a macroplayer, meaning, your emphasis is on reaction and resources, which again, is itself just a strategy, usually by endgame zerg.

It is true, that strategic decisions are limited after a while, but usually then the game is over. But they are limited in every RTS, in this terms, civilization comes far closer to a “strategy game” anyway.

SC:BW was so nice, because you could build a small ops team, attack the main front, and sneak the spec ops in from behind; something, which is very hard in SC2, where the maps are usually very carefully built, and part of the gameplay. There are hardly any asymetric maps which still worked mostly in SC:BW, so I think, I understand what you seem to miss.

At least they didn’t do heroes this time.

Hah, I don’t think you quite understand the scale of SupCom. There if you fight only on one side, you do something wrong or you didn’t notice an enemy group from somewhere.

Have you played HotS Campaign?

I watched a couple matches on youtube  definitely will try out that game.

Nah, I didn’t finish the expansion campaign, coz i get bored by singleplayer. But I hope you did watch some tournament games in SC2 also, where you might see, there is a lot of decision making, flanking, etc. going on - very similar to the SupCom games I watched - it’s just incredibly hard to get to the point, where you can actually play it more like it, usually it’s more decisive, more microing. Of course the scale is smaller, but the units are - as i said - also a lot more balanced against each other

I mostly play Desert Strike and Starbattle only.

Actually I think I played a map losely built on the principle of Supreme Commander in the Arcade, which was fun, so now I know where the ideas came from

Anyway, all I can think of with the title is this scene from sg1.

and now back to the citizens of stars.

How did we go from FPVS ( first person Vehilcuar Shooter) to RTS?!

That is probably a good question. I think this thread is a very nice example of thread derailing, should be studied.

Talking about RTS online, i really enjoyed Company of Heroes. For me it was more fun than StarCraft. You can check some matches on youtube if you’re curious.

Dawn of war 2 was better. Same idea, but with SPEISHHH MERINS!!!

Same idea, same developer. Pretty awesome game indeed though.

It was a pity it was plagued with bugs and balance the races was impossible.

But yes, quite awesome game, although I still prefer the DoW 1 and the base style RTS.

Never played DoW2, only the first, and while i loved having my custom flag and insignia, and especially the Eldar blasting armies away with the cool physics, mostly the relatively chaotic balance made me cry. Was fun, but not enough to make a bigger audience happy, like Age of Empires 2 or WC3 or SC:BW did.

I loved Company of Heroes. A Microtacticians dream :D…

I am currently glimpsing a lot at Wargame AirLand Battle, too, simply to play with chinooks and warthogs. Seems also like a decent RTS approach.

I think this thread will balance back to the main theme of Citizen anyway, once there is something to actually talk about. Which isn’t really the case now for half a year, except how much money they already made. I for one, am open to more Offtopic Topics

(I guess anyone who follows a topic about an upcoming game as citizen, might be interested in a various set of games anyway, besides the fact that some hate and some love it…)

Interestingly, while Total Annihilation was the best RTS in its time, TA: Kingdoms turned out to be unforgettable xxxx. Also, from Quakes i only liked the odd ones, 2 and 4 was not quite the hit for me.

I liked those too, but not in MP. CoH just moved more natural/fluid on the tactical ground in my view. I’m a great Sci-Fi fan (i believe everybody on a spaceships forum is  ) but CoH also had a better atmosphere.

I thought we talking about star Citizen. Anyone look at the dogfighting module? Now called “Arena Commander”

I did, looked awesome when it wasn’t crashing or just spinning out of control XD.

Also, helmet flip!!

Looking forward to crash my 300i into space rocks as soon as possible.

I was wondering how mouse aiming works.

sad news that team troyka had to pull out of the next great starship for various real life reasons (link to rsi forum post)

they really had a good shot for the finals.

So sad to know that Karanak has bad health. I wish he can recover swiftly. He has great design talent, and we owe him like more than half of the awesome designs we have here.

Hes an amazing artist. Made everything to T5 pratically, except the pirate ships and the weird mauler…

Well this is off topic but game is interesting, similar to star citizen.
