Not sure how well this would integrate in to the game, but it might be interesting to see this addition.
Structural failure would work like a modular system for both standard ships and Destroyers. It would change the ships so that focussed fire on only one part of the ship would have less of an effect as fire spread across the ship. For instance, a destroyer could be targeted by a railgun fighter from the rear. After a certain percentage of damage is taken, maybe around 30%, the rear of the destroyer would break off and render the engine and capacitor permanently irreparable, outside of eclipse launchers. This would also lock damage from that area, making it impossible for hits to deal more damage. The increased damage on the ship will more than balance out the blocked damage and I think it would be really cool to see just parts of ships flying around. XD
An easy way to add the changes in models would be to split “wreck” models in to thirds front to back and side to side. For rendering on the ship, you could just make a portion of it be unrendered and replaced by a set plane texture that looks like burning ship innards or something. Just like replacing the broken part of the ship with a jagged predefined texture that is cut down to the silliuhette of the ship. This way, the only new asset would be the broken ship innards texture.
Make it things complicated(no damage on this destroyed part)
Would AoE weapon get a significant buff as the ‘destroyed part don’t let damage pass through’ would mostly ignored.
Permanently lose of control is in no way acceptable!
Not permanent, just loss of afterburns until an eclipse engi sees you.
Not as complicated as it could be.
AoE weapons can be given selective damage output, so when they would hit this broken area their damage would be largely neutralised. Phasers and singularities would need some tweaks to not deal damage.
In fact you are suggesting that the destroyer’s mechanic is implemented for for standard ships too right ?
Problem is : Ships are far too small for this. No way you can aim on purpose at the motor/capacitor on a fighter/interceptor. It would just nerf frigates, nothing more.
And the permanent thing is bad. There are sometimes no engi at all in a fight, and they don’t all use eclipse. And those who do have no way to see that your motor is damaged.

Yeah, standard ships wouldn’t really work with this. And permanent outside of eclipse, like I said. You don’t just grow back half of your ship, (but maybe the Alien ones you can.)
Well, tbh, the suggestion is useful on paper and brings out a bit more complex way of fighting rather than “CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGEEEEEEEE!!!111”, but in the game it would kill that tiny bit of fun left that most people have. Don’t forget how much patience the playerbase has in general lol.
