[Sound] Invasion voice overs use bad english

“Say goodbye to your rusty ship, merse!”

This is grammatically wrong.

In English, the word “merc” is pronounced “merk”, with a hard K sound. See “Mercedes” as an example - same “s” sound on the c, but when shortened to merc it becomes a hard K.

Given that the Dev team clearly place a great deal of importance on getting things right, it seems a shame to have this error left unchecked. Maybe it’s meant to be “pirate slang” or somesuch, but since everything else used in the voice overs is standard English, this doesn’t make a lot of sense.

>Implying that on the 40th century English hasn’t evolved (or devolved) into what we have now in the game.

I don’t see the point on changing this, to be honest…

Really? You truly are scraping the barrel for reasons to shut people down. In that case, why bother to translate at all? Why not just have everything in Russian? Or better yet, why not have only Fed speak English (your made up future English where they pronounce everything wrong), Empire can all be Russian and Jericho can have an entirely made up language! Want to complete Tech Contracts? Good luck translating the requirements!

I’d love to have the Jericho voice actors speaking some random language.

And how do you expect me to not “shut you down” when you type something like this.

Can we please have these voiceovers fixed so the English dub actually sounds like the guy knows how to speak English?

Would be nice if you respect the “voice actors” to begin with before asking anyone to be respectful with you (in fact I was).

We don’t need it to begin with in the game, yet they implement it and it doesn’t even sound bad, why would you be whining about it? Seriously.

This is wrong.

They are pirates dude, they can talk bad if they wish. YARRRR!!!

I just find it odd that they sound suspiciously like whoever reads the briefings.

Most likely is the same voice actor so what? will you do it for free? and will you carry on with all the recording costs?

Sounds terrible to me.

But yeah, the first post was overly hostile. It wasn’t intended to be, so I’ve edited it a little. Point is, when the Devs are concerned enough about getting the in-game text right that any player can highlight mistakes and propose changes, it seems bizarre to take a mistake from the audio and say “meh, close enough.”

If I could, I would.

I don’t care if you complain about something as long as you don’t despise someone’s job. It may be better or worse but don’t expect me or anyone to treat you properly if OP is written that way.

Again, I wasn’t even hostile or bad mannered towards you.

Voice actor is one and the same, but there used to some other one, who did this much better.

Pronunciation is wrong and broken as well.

For example: 1 person is merc, not mercs…

Obvioulsy done with low budget, sloppy and with no backgroud checks.

They should post a contest and requirements for certain sentences and voice acting.

Each person, which records them with specific set of sotware/harware, should apply.

Reward prize is 100000GS for the winner.

I think voice acting with some talents may be a much better way.

In an ideal world, I’d like the game to have multiple actors:

The female CPU voice.

An Imperial Officer.

A Federation Officer.

A Jericho Officer.

A Mercenary Contractor.

Enemies (more voices the better, but one would do).

I don’t know if it’s a problem of budget, but I do think it’s a problem of localisation; I’d bet money that whoever came up with the script is not a native English speaker. It’s “about” right. Close enough, but not quite right.

Getting the community on board is definitely a good way to go about this. Hell, you don’t even need perfectly clean audio for this stuff. Having inter-ship communication with a bit of crackle and distortion adds a sense of realism.

I know. I have the same opinion, as you. However, most likely this won’t happen.

I’ll tell you what, JasanQuinn. If you are still interested, give us some sentences/lines, grammatically correct, which should be given in Invasion and those who care and can do this, should record a voice overs.

We need female voices as well, so we need both genders. We should definitely organise something, even if it is unofficial. Just to prove, we can do it much better!

I want Napdar in it. I am sure ESB agrees with me. We need her voice in SC… xD

Napdar, say some lines!

Start a contest, Jasan! Create a new thread, if you agree and put some good rules.

  • recording program/software - effects, etc…

  • requirements

… and so on

I have forwarded the idea to the devs.

No, Napdar has an exclusivity contract with WPK!

Much as I like the idea of a competition, it would really need support on the dev’s end. Maybe if we poke the bear enough times it’ll give it a shot.  :004j:

ha

But absolutely, sourcing some to the fans would be nice. Although it might be weird for the winner to hear their own voice every couple games.

Have some Easter Egg audiotracks that occur when you do something weird.

It will be fixed in the next patch

And how do you know that?
