Server Region Settings

Why in the world does it drop me on servers outside the EU when I select EU Region?

Is there some kind of awesome idea behind locking people into unplayably laggy servers, forcing them to either play with lag or not at all when instead they could play without lag for a longer queue time??

Because it works as preferred region not as the only region. If you select EU and it doesn’t find you a game in X time it will put you again in the All Region queue.

Ok let me rephrase this.
Why would anyone make it this way?? It is like signing up for one thing and getting something entirely different, inferior and without a chance to get back your money.
There already is an “Any Region” setting people could use if they were willing to trade their lower ping for fast(er) queue time!

+1 THIS. OMG CAN THIS PLEASE BE CHANGED.

I’m so tired of getting into games other than US servers.  it happens all the time, even when I select US as the region.  I DO NOT WANT TO GET INTO ANOTHER REGION IF I ACTUALLY SELECT THE ONE I WANT. It shouldn’t put you in all regions if it doesn’t get a game.  Some of us don’t mind the wait since we can actually shoot with a lower ping.

Steam users are pissed about it as well.

And people on this forum since over a year.
It doesn’t matter how good a game is. If it keeps throwing you into matches with unmanageable ping and locks your ship for their duration, there are only 2 things one can do: Try to enjoy a laggy mess you can’t control, or not play at all.
This seems obvious to me, so I wonder why the devs are sabotaging their own game and forcing people to leave for one of the plenty of other games out there, which might not be as great but at least playable.

The setting works as preferred region for a reason. Depending on time, tier and region the wait time could even go up to 15-30min.

15-30 minutes for a playable game is preferable to 5 minutes for a game so bad you have to drop out.

You’re completely full of it.  There is nothing about this setting that works.

I am from the US.  So a ping of 100+ is difficult to play with.  So I choose US region so I can have a 30-50 ms ping…instead, I wait for 2 minutes to get into a russian server.  I wait 2 minutes for most games.  So what the hell?

Why do people actually talk as if that were beneficial to anyone?

If someone WANTS to play on higher ping servers, rather than wait for a longer time, they can simply set the server region accordingly. The way it is now there is nothing left to do but join and quit a few times before giving up and logging out.

If you want to play in whatever server region, you have 2 options: - Select “Any Region” or select a specific region.

If you want to stick to a certain region, you have 0 options.

Again I don’t get why people don’t see this, except they need an excuse to keep it this way.

Space combat fans have very little to pick from in terms of MMOs. I find it sad that the developers ignore such a crucial problem when they have already built such a great game and, from what I can tell, responded great to community feedback in general.

You are leaving people no other choice than to wander off to games like Star Citizen.

Not being able to play on 100+ ping is just sad as a US player, well, any player for that matter, but especially US. You should have learned how to adapt and play in up to 200 ping (above that makes it hard). As US players, we can’t rely on getting US servers (even in US primetime) so we have to adapt and learn to fly in high ping. I personally have adapted and can fly inties fairly well in up to 180 ping. If I get a server with more than 180 ping, I play fighters or frigates.

15-30 minutes for a playable game is preferable to 5 minutes for a game so bad you have to drop out.

I don’t view this as preferable at all. I would rather suck it up and deal with the 130 ping (on EU servers) or 180+ ping (on RU servers) and get a game every 2 minutes (give or take), than wait 15-30 minutes to play one 5-10 minute game. If you are disconnecting because you aren’t on a US server or you have more than 100 ping, you shouldn’t be playing this game. While I would prefer to only play on US servers, I would much rather spend time playing the game, rather than sitting in queue to get a game on a home server.

The solution to the problem of getting foreign servers isn’t this setting, it is the player base. If you truly want to solve this problem, pester the devs into advertising this game a lot more in the US (and other countries). Increasing the player base to the point where there are as many US players as there are EU and RU will increase the number of US servers you play in.

Don’t twist my words to make it sound like I am incapable of playing well at high ping.  I just do not enjoy it, and it takes the fun out of the game.  Especially when my ship starts moving directions I do not want to go, and making any chance of effectively evading enemy fire impossible.

The dev team has applied the only cost effective means of resolving this issue.

Were there more players in the US our servers would populate faster.

The dev team has little control over this. The only way to resolve this issue is to expand the US player base.

As you know by talking to your friends, no one in the US wants to play a space shooter. They want future weapons and blood. They want to think they are actually learning about combat.

If your ping to google or a test server is more than 20ms, you could get to this ping by haveing a direct fiber connection. It saves about 20-30ms… Course it will help with all of your other games.

Maybe, if more than one US server is being used they could drop one. Probably already only one though…

This is BS.

First of all, not everything is about you USAmericans.

Second, if the developers decide to lock out all those people who don’t play shooters with notable lag and delay, because “there are not enough players”, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see how little sense this makes.

Third, YOU preferring a high ping over long queue times does not mean everyone else agrees, or should agree with you.

If they force a high ping upon people who simply won’t bother playing that way, instead of giving them the legit option to just wait longer for an enjoyable match, then this community won’t just not grow, it will shrink for sure.

I personally love the game and enjoy playing very much during those low ping matches, but if I am forced to play with high ping on a server abroad together with other players from my area, who could have just as well populated a low ping patch in our region instead, then I will walk and rather play an inferior game which is playable.

Bottom line:
Let people play where they want to play!
If someone prefers to stay regional for low ping and accepts the longer waiting times, LET THEM!
If someone prefers to play abroad for shorter queue times and can deal with the high ping, LET THEM!

Damnit, devs, just CHANGE THIS ALREADY.  IT’S BEEN BROKEN FOR OVER A FREAKING YEAR.  You can’t fix something so elementary?  Give me a break.

The mechanic isn’t broken. As Error said, it is working as intended. It is called a preference for a reason, it doesn’t guarantee you a game in your preferred server. Right now, the best way to get games in your preferred server is fly during that regions primetime. I find that when I play in US primetime, I get US servers 80-90% of the time (even set on “any” region).

I think if a change were to be made, the matchmaker could search for a full 5 minutes (instead of 2) before placing you in the “any region” queue.

That’s really all I want.  It’s just stupid that most games take more than 2 minutes to get anyways, so by then the region selection is pointless.

Yeah, that would be a change for the better. I don’t mind waiting 5 minutes for a game, but for me, waiting beyond 5 minutes is stupid. I personally prefer playing games more often than waiting for one, regardless of the ping (to an extent).

Then tell me one thing:

What are people supposed to do who simply can’t/don’t want to play with higher pings, yet are continuously thrown onto servers abroad during the only times they can play the game? Right now the only solution these people have: to not play the game.

I think the solution the devs would want people to pick seems clear? Unless they prefer people rather not play the game.

As opposed to: to not play the game, OR to play the game but with longer queue times.
