I find it appropriate. And there are more important things to do than worrying about stupid stuff.

Stupid stuff? That’s your opinion, of course. It’s relevant enough for me and many others. A lot of people dislike this term.
It would be prudent to change it, since players would better understand what current “karma” system really means and reputation would be a much wiser/better choice.
It has nothing to do with translation. There are 1000 important subjects that this game needs to focus in. Not the fact that the Karma system is called karma instead of reputation.
Yes, resi, but those 1000 important things will never get fixed, so we might as well focus on the inconsequential stuff that might.
Personally, I’d have much preferred reputation to be faction-specific. When you attack criminals, you get bonuses with all factions (more with the local one). Kill members of a faction and that group shuns you, but the others approve.
That could result in some interesting game dynamics of players being welcome in one region, but shunned elsewhere.
