monocrystals were much harder to get
to be honest, while that is true, monocrystals were introduced to make a “new rare resource” for the new ships back then, and this was just continued. every time something got “eased up” in the economy, new rare items were added at the end of the line. so while it feels like, this has gotten better, actually the whole concept of introducing new rares and deprecating old rares by increasing the drops is just a trick, that has a huge impact on the image of the game, as any game working like this is quickly seen as “B-grade” and cheap.
if monocrystals were still the main resource to craft all kinds of ships, new or old, i would agree, that it has become more accessible. but in reality, it just got replaced by new carrots.

but now we have events every once in a while that help out a lot,
there were always events that helped out. only gotcha is, you had to have your basic gear and active playtime to make use of them. that has not changed much, but probably your reception of it changed, since you already geared up by now.

OS was worse than it is now
not sure, os is quite how it was in the beta, except the drops are worse. but at least the lovelessly placed alien spawns were toned down, and the map has a bit more exploration feel.

Those that are romanticizing the past make themselves feel bad about the present.
sure. because feeling bad about the present is only the result of forgetting that it was just as bad all along.

hardly, they would be “better” in current realities, but in realities of that time they had as much or more influence on the game than current imbas are.
sure, because intentionally designed imba ships are much less painful by now than balance issues or bugs of the past, before the tharga era, where this madness began.
