The 0.95 patch quietly changed the Fed R5 implant from a boost to pitch (up/down) rotation rate to a strafe speed boost.
That implant was one of the few things that made turning fights interesting because you had to be constantly rolling to orient yourself for maximum turn speed. Now that significant skill element is completely gone because ships turn equally fast on all axis. This, to me, is a travesty as it seriously reduces a major skill element in close in dog fights.
Please either return the Fed R5 implant to its previous state, or bake in a bonus to rotation speed on the pitch axis as part of the flight model. It made close up fights far more enjoyable and rewarding than just turning in some arbitrary direction and playing a point and click game.
Dunno what to say about reversing this thing or changing it, but i freakin love that strafing speed bonus…
You’re right when it comes to skill, but just how many people are there using the empire one and not stressing themselves to do extra maneuvers for pitch-turning?
The only short-timed maneuver i can think of with the former fed implant is to backflip behind the enemy that chases you.
Currently as soon as i noticed the implant has been changed i’ve immediately installed it. Dodging stuff and levitating on asteroid surfaces became excellent tactics and basically existed only for T4+ earlier. Actually making a VERY good use of the new effects.
Depends on the ships you fly I suppose. Flying interceptors I used to use that implant and would roll rather excessively to capitalize on it. The strafe speed bonus is rather nice but I currently implanted the overall rotation speed bonus instead which is the next best thing to the old bonus. Because of that I’m not all that bothered by the change.
You just made me remember: before when i used to fly with pitch turning fed implant i didn’t experience wobbles… As soon as i installed the empire one… well, that’s when they started. Experienced anything of the kind? Remembering this because i was also rotating like mad to make use of it’s bonuses, while with empire i just go left, right, up or down no matter how my ship is banked.
Not feeling wobbles at all with current implant. Basically i strafe in circles having my guns pointed permanently at the ship in the center of my orbit. Superb tactic.
Not talking of latency wobbles, but game-mechanic ones. That thing where your ship simply doesnt want to align with the forward axis no matter what you do.
latency exaggerates natural game-mechanic wobbles I suppose. I can test the effects of different implants when I get one of those sessions again during Russian peak-time.
there is a compensation (dampening?) mechanic in place. that is why we aren’t flying newtonian in SCon.
for example, the ship can stop by releasing W key.
based on that logic, a left roll must also have an opposite dampening effect because you do not continue rolling after letting go of Q key.
what is unclear is the effect on mouse turns.
If you can see your ship, it has directional thrusters that act in OPPOSITE to what you are doing, which actively counters the newtonian physics. Turn those thrusters off, and then we can fly in SPACE like a unguided space torpedo…into a rock.
