(Optional) Ship tree reset

As many will likely have already noticed 0.8.0 went live today, and brought quite a few sizable changes to the ship tree, modules and basic game mechanics. Whether or not one likes the changes is of course another issue altogether, and what i have heard so far is quite a mixed bag of responses.

Ignoring the generally unhelpful “My overpowered combo is now gone, RAGE” and “Learn2DealWithIt” style comments, i think most of the issue boils down to the fact that people suddenly ended up with a set of ships who’s behaviour is completely different than it was before the changes. Some ships changed their special ability, others suddenly lacked the ability to equip ones favorite modules and even others changed tier or ended up in a completely undesirable spot in the upgrade tree. I for one know that my own ship tree suddenly resembles a swiss cheese and has gaps in each of the the upgrade paths. And i equally know that, if i were to start over, i would have chosen a different path from the start.

Because of this i would suggest including the addition of the ability to reset ones ship tree(s). This could either be a full reset for everyone or an optional “Implant style” pay-to-reset system that could reset one or more of the users trees. To keep this balanced it might include a cost per tree, or perhaps a system where 50-75% of the ship purchase prices in the tree would be refunded. Losing 25-50% of the money invested in a tree would still be a heavy investment, and i assume it would prevent people from hopping all over various trees in order to change to the most desirable ship for each tier.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

everyone that I know that knows what a soft wipe is wants one and wonders why they didn’t do it

The change introduced in 0.8 has really changed it so that it is no longer a ‘Tree’, in my opinion anyway.

Previously, I had the base Interceptor, Fighter and Frigate from T1, and slowly built them up to max synergy, then upgraded with one of the two upgraded versions of the tier and was repeating this process with the T2 craft.  This meant that some ‘Branches’ sat bare as I didn’t acquire the craft on them.

Now, I really don’t have that option as, with the exception of Empire, there are no ‘Dead Branches’ up to T3, and to gain a particular craft, I must have obtained all of the ones before it (ok so that actually existed before, but now I mean if I want a particular variant of a craft, and not the the other, or to progress to the next tier, I still have to purchase both).

I honestly think the ‘Tech tree’ style previously was much better, and frankly, the tier and ship role changes could still have been implemented with it.

And I’ve just realized this is a slight deviation from the OP, so apologies for that.

few days ago i started lvl’ing up all the ships starting with T1 and up - what i noticed while paying attention more on ship roles and where they are in the tree make sense and are actually well placed - faction differences matter and so on - the only thing whats wrong with it are the dead ends or the connections between ships - how the ships are in the slots is good atm
