That’s what I thought. Just model them after destroyers and the real work would just be programming command control and GUI.
I’d love to see something like Swarm in game, but even if the devs like this idea, we have to wait at least until next September to see it implemented. Right now they are working on destroyers, and I’m fine with it.
Good job Fox, now this idea is obsessing me. So I’ll post some of my brainstorming here.
The Stalk piece itself should have little to non existent firepower. 2 guns max (like an interceptor), but pretty effective at close range, in order to deal with players trying to ambush you while managing the drones. All the stalk’s power is in the drones; a full attack from all of them should deal something like 5k-7k dps. The singular form instead should have the firepower of a Long Range. In this form the ship uses the guns of the drones, but not all of them (some pieces won’t have clear line of fire), only half maybe (2.5k - 3.5k dps). But remember that the drone guns have low range, because they are built to swarm the enemy and orbit them while shooting, and that they can be destroyed, reducing your overall dps.
The real power of a Swarm Class ship resides in the fact that you can build “squads” of drones, making you able of killing multiple targets at once while being far away from the actual fight. So, that’s why the stalk should be pretty weak.
A ship of this type could be used amazingly well by people with high multitasking capabilities, while being almost useless to unskilled players. Pretty different from the last class introduced…
That’s what I was thinking exactly. The stalk would only have its central cannon, and because no drones were nearby if it was an ambush, the cannon would deal minimal damage, but possibly have a slightly higher rate of fire to allow it to be useful close-range.
The Swarm beam cannon thing would only be effective in Singular form, as it relies on drones to power it.

I was thinking more of multiple lasers, coming one from each drone (Have you ever seen the forerunners sentinels on the Halo saga?), that obliterates everything when swarming the enemy. On the singular form, only a part of the drones has clear line of sight, because other drones obstruct it, so less lasers/other weapons fire at the same time.
I was thinking that the drones in singular form would fire beams of energy to the front of the ship while it was “charging” and that it didn’t rely on drone LoS for power, but simply drone count. So it would look like streams of energy flowing from each drone on the hull, down to the center point of the cannon on the stalk before firing, then unleashing one massive blue beam.

Mmh, it’s actually cooler than my idea. +1
How many drones/pieces such a ‘Swarmship’ will have?

I think around 10, but it is going to be different for each specific ship model.
How would this ‘powerup’ of the mainweapon function? With a direct connection via cable/capacitor or more in the way the drones in ‘Matrix’ reactivated a drilling-machine via electro-shock?
I have 2 ideas for the model.
1.) Embedded drones in the ship
2.) Modular design
Each one have its pro and con points(design/function-wise)
The ship model would be like a stalk, with drones stacked around it clove ring it up. They would act as extended hull volume, but be able to be killed off if they are hit too much, damaging the hull further and leaving a hole, much like the destroyer modules.

I totally suck at drawing, so I can’t show you any concept art. In my mind, I see a swarm class ship formed by a “core” (the stalk), completely surrounded (except for the engines) by other pieces, which are the drones. It practically has 2 very different models. If I find a good image that resembles how I imagine the ship, I’ll post it.
Exactly how I imagined it, except it would be the stalk, which was completely covered, except for the engines and very tip of the stalk, because that is where the main weapon is located.

I already have 2 designs in my mind. But I’m asking which is preferred/wished.
Edit: Maybe I can show them later.
No thanks…a (Battle) Carrier class would be good though.
Larger than Destroyer and can have wings of drones or AI-controlled Interceptors.

That’s essentially what this is. My idea just looks cooler. ;3
You know, that carriers are different fromd swarmships?
Star Trek Beyond was great, guys.

Nah. This is completely relevant to this topic. You just have to watch it. ;p
