moving asteroids that would crush ships

 

if all the asteroids / misc debris could move if you shot / pushed on them or hit them with another asteroid.

would make a more interesting game. also it would give teams a few interesting new tactics to use.

 

eg set an asteroid moving use it as cover to advance or push the tigtly packed ones to get them moving to crush those little interceptors as they fly through them.

 

I also think that if you hit a meteor/debris it should do more damage. I think it would encourage better flying/pilots.

 

Also it would make the ship size more important.

 

I also think that there should be bigger sizes of ships. it would make them think twice about maneuvering inside asteroid belts.

Tricky to implement, plus imagine following the asteroid, having 4 snipers hit it with disintegrator, goodbye push.

I’m all for this, done right anyway. It would be a great counter sniping tool.

no for following reasons

 

  1. removing all cover from the middle of the map to make sniping easy

 

  1. hiding behind an asteroid (where you can’t be seen with sensors) to move across the entire field e.g to captain or in order to deliver a bomb sneakily. Already get’s done more then enough on the edges of the map

 

  1. unfair to slower ships like frigates

 

  1. would skyrocket system requirements

yes it would be hard to make happen especially so late in development but Im not a game designer mabe they can just add the physics from the ships to the asteroids too.

but the payoff would be very cool i think.

but that could be part of the new tactics involved with something like this. 

That’s what I mean by done right. Obviously you would only be able to do it to smaller asteroids, and yes frigates might get the short end of the stick, but I think that there is potential to add a valuable aspect to the game.

Mabe only the engineer class of frigate would have a tractor beam big enough to move an asteroid? would save on system requirements.

 

Also it would force people to think about tactics instead of just a generic fly over there and shoot.

you can ram into smaller asteroids to make them move. However your idea is on an entirely different scale tbh. Think about the amount of asteroids you have, then each time you ram or shoot into one of them, angle, force and direction of shot would have to be calculated in order to get a flight path. Furthermore an asteroid hitting only ONE other asteroid would create the need for BOTH asteroids recieving the same set of calculations to get 2 seperate flight paths. imagine those asteroids hit other asteroids etc etc etc. And this is a chain reaction that happens if only a single ship moves an asteroid. I think you can see how that could be taxing as compared to some singular small asteroids.

 

Also I quite like the idea of being able to blow chunks out of asteroids discussed in the thread husker linked you too (second one). This would somewhat implement your idea off including your environment while not making it too complicating, large scale.

Now that I see destruct able asteroid thread, this one is not as appealing.

this one is more doable but after playing the game some more last night Im not sure that it would make much more of a difference the ships can fly so fast that a moving asteroid wouldn’t make much of a difference.

 

although i still believe that more damage when you hit them to the ship and to the asteroid (crater) would make flying skill much more important.
