The thing is, that Empire LRFs have an extremely steep learning curve… The desintegrator is not that easy to use right from the beginning.
The first times I looked closer into the LRFs was in T3 and I sucked terribly.
Then I started to synergize the whole tree from T1 on and learned how to play that class.
At the moment i know about 10 players in the whole game which are deadly with those ships.
I had to grind Empire LRF’s from the Harpy to the Acid Hydra. I didn’t have anything from Empire when it was a loyalty grind rather than synergy grind. I stopped when the devs threw in the Hydra 2 -> Styx jump. The learning curve is not that much, but I had the benefit of starting in T1 with T1 skilled opponents. I’d call it one of the easiest ships to get good at. It was just so boring and easy. With some practice pixel hunting moving targets isn’t too hard. Jericho LRF on the other hand does takes more skill. I just wish they were more survivable for gunboat mode.
Ive been using jerry ones as a hybrid gunship/actual use of the torp. Its decently effective due to purple coilmortars on it
That’s almost a requirement for LRF’s and CovOps. For T2 grinding I used a purple heavy blaster, for PvP. I didn’t want to spend anything and I had it in warehouse.
Ofc it’s useless. Sluggish like an elephant, needs an eternity to turn around, even longer - to accelerate… Not to mention its abilities to protect itself and to survive. The few times I played this garbage class - I died every time and never won a battle (PvE only; I don’t play PvP).
Here’s an eloquent proof of which the best class is:
Command figthers - 6000+ points. Frigates - less than 5000. No need to say more.

Then, before judging, I suggest you just roam for a bit in PvP and see how that “übberclass” is.

LRF and Guards are the best classes for PvE, except for a very few situations. LRF pilots’ skills vary from below the ground to sky high, so meeting a good one is a rare occasion.
Don’t analyze efficiency in pve by points, but by completion time. The shorter, the better. THEN efficiency points come in play, but not all that important.

In what PVE is it possible to murder more than 400 enemies? I can remember of only one that reached a good number, the one that we need to destroy the weapons of a dreadnought in hard mode. But still, that was completed waaaaaaaay before 400 enemies were killed. And why the hell would anyone do that one when blackwood is way easyer. And i dont believe it was piratebase attack, since theres an unmistakable silluete of a zealot hull on one of the players. And the points done are being done by command ships i guess, and they are not even near as good in pve as, lets say, an engeneer. You only get a ton of assists, that are mostly not even necessary.
And tbh, i tried today blackwood with the first empire lrf T3 there is, equipped with a mk2 blaster, infrared mk1, heatsink, and it already melted pretty fast the stations. I wonder what a T5 full purple would do… wait, ive seen a photo of a guy with each shot taking 20k from the sation, with a LRF, so, in PVE, in some situations, like, MASSIVE DPS the LFR is far ahead. Overall, engeneers.

Hidden shipyard or something similar - right now I can’t remember the exact name. With a good ship, good party and a good position to take you can kill many more than 400. When we did this score we still had 35 minutes left. In these 35 minutes you could kill a lot more than just 400 enemies because they keep coming - there’s no number limit for enemies on this map. I suggested to my friends to do this map at the maximum time by taking out all objectives but one (at each round) and keep it for the last 5 minutes but they didn’t want to spend so much time on that - despite that we could drain out the synergy pool for this particular map.
Btw, Blackwood is boring, so I avoid playing on it. The maps I like are the one above - Hidden shipyard, one with huge icy asteroids (in the 3rd round there’s a boss to kill right after the first wave of 31 ships) whose name I don’t remember and another one with cargo ships to destroy and to escort. Now there’s only 1 map left to unlock.
Which will beat you in the ground no questions asked: Pirate Complex. That’s a T4-5 mission used by the best players to gain T5 purple mods (and some cash along the way).
If you want to farm kills in hidden outpost - round 1, cap the 2 closest stations, sit around the 3rd till timer ends without capping it, get 1000 kills. Easy. Way too easy.
Now since that’s not although impressive, try finishing Blackwood in 5 minutes. THAT is an achievement in pve since it’s the most farmed mission by the top corps for credits.

This is what I said in my previous post and what I suggested to my friends but they didn’t want to spend that long on this map. And it may be too easy as you said, but I like easy. To me easy is fun, medium is challenging and hard is a nerve breaker.
Desintegrator is a VERY powerful tool in the right hands.
As you may well know, I don’t exactly fall in the “right hands” part of the thing. =P
So I just ignore the F-key and faceroll in the middle lines. Do I die a lot? Yes. But, as long as I can take out a minimum of 4-6 ships before I do die, I’m perfectly fine with that. SR is for sissies, anyway.
Im still wondering whats the point of wasting 2 hours on a mission just to get a high score and huge amount of kills. Synergy side i dont think it would be better than, i dont know, a gazillion runs in blackwood, and credwise also the same. The kills doesnt count for the profile so… then…waste of lifetime.
About LRF, it could be modified, like creating a module that has a 20sec CD (maybe more) that shots a desintegrator shot from the normal aim, or half as powerfull than that. Make some other modules to increase speed, like a micro jump, that moves it about 4km forward. It could become cool as a heavy gunship, as long as it doesnt become completelly OP against smaller vessels. Make it excell at frig killing then.

LRF needs gunship style modules. Right now the closest it has is IR pulsar, and that only works for ships with a target lock. It has the worst survivability modules of any frigate, and LRF modules that only encourage sniping. A warping mechanism would be great. Maybe a module to triple main weapon damage but reduce fire rate by 50%?

I tried running an LRF with JUST survivability mods… I lived for an extra 3-5 seconds without the assistance of Engineers.
There have been plenty of suggestions to modify LRF modules to fit a dual-role… But, to be fair, they’d probably have to do the same for a handful of other ships. That or actually ADD more modules for all roles.
The problem in this case would be to create a monster that would devour the entire world.
Ive been told that on T4+ empire snipers are already a megatank. Imagine that with even more focused gunship firepower, it would become the destroyer of worlds, everything would melt in its path and the gates of hell would unleash a nightmare of unbalance never ever seen in the history of games.
Hull tanking is still superior to shield tanking. In smaller matches it becomes far more obvious. The shield mods need buffed and hull mods nerfed. I’m still trying to work out a decent build for my mauler. Just look at the ECM’s, commands, and LRF’s of Empire and Jericho. Each time the Empire’s variant is tankier and deadlier.
