I use this function a lot, but sometimes it just doesn’t lock as it should. I don’t know if it’s by design or whatever, but it’s annoying.
For example, I remember a situation where I was being chased by an interceptor (I was also an interceptor) and I couldn’t lock the guy locking me if I wasn’t facing him. As soon as faced him, it worked. I can only speculate what happened. Maybe I was mistaken and I had more than one lock on me and it was trying to lock onto another target that was too far away/cloaked etc. I don’t remember exactly, but the guy was clearly shooting me from behind (so not cloaked etc) and it just wouldn’t lock him. Instead, it would play the lock sound for like a quarter of a second and then stop.
Besides this, I wanted to suggest improving the way it chooses the target to lock onto, when you have more than one lock. It should lock on the closest guy, the one chasing you, the one damaging you. Something like that. It doesn’t help if I have 3 locks and it wants to lock onto the cloaked one or similar.
It would also be nice if, when you clicked to lock on to target (middle mouse button) it didn’t require you to be directly over the target. When there’s a 700ms inty orbiting you it’d be great that the game assumed you wanted to lock onto the only enemy on screen and did so.
Lock on any often works for nearest. One thing to consider is the guy attacking you might not have a target lock. I’ve had instances of trying to find out who was attacking me but there wasn’t a target lock on me. They understand the gigas II implant and the importance of target locks.
Side note, in safe zones of invasion I’ll sometimes harass something with target locks by locking on and clearing the lock repeatedly, especially if they don’t cancel a lock.
This is the reason I have “lock next enemy” and “lock who your teammate is locking”. When one doesn’t work, typically, another does.
But absolutely, it’d be great to have a fix. What I’d absolutely love would be a way for “lock who’s locking you” to be able to cycle between the people who are locking you.
Yeah, I have my keys mapped for all the locking types the game provides, but there are still issues with it as the others mentioned. I find that when trying to lock on to a very specific target in a group of enemies, it’s almost impossible depending on their arrangement. However, I guess this is SLIGHTLY realistic (for the year 4610…) as it would be difficult to lock a specific enemy in such a situation.
