Heh the nice thing about Open Source projects is a lot of slave…I mean people can contribute to the game and really finish a lot of the workload.
Perhaps, one day, there may be a community attachment like that where people can help the devs with their workload, probably just a fantasy for non-open source projects though.
New ships - yes. They don’t necessarily have to be massive, but maybe subclasses in between Intercepters and Attack ships… and in between Attack ships and frigates. To keep things proportional to the size of the maps, etc.

I like the idea
before subclasses i think they should focus on covering those roles that none of the actual ships cover:
support or buffer ships: frigates have some support skill such as energy replenish or heal but still far away from a true support, a support ship would be a ship with little offensive but loads of buffs or “auras” that can enhace the performance of ally ship (dmg, ressistance, energy regen, etc…) and then gets a reward based on performance of allys under his influence, support ships could olso be used to resuply limited amunition such as rockets.
glass cannon: ship that has little defense but is capable of doing loads of dmg in a very short time, they are usualy mobile (in between fighter and interceptor) and rely on burst dmg ( very high dmg with long reloads)

Glass cannon I’d have to see in action. The Jericho frig torpedoes and Legion frigs cannons already take smaller ships shields down in practically one hit… If a Glass cannon ship’s only role is damage, then I think it would have to be equal to or stronger than the these frigs… which in turn would seem really overpowered.

Glass canon means it does lots of damage but has very low structure.
So basically, it would be stronger then the frigs but it would have about the same health as a fighter or less.

agree, and for the ppl who want battleships, carriers, destroyers, dreadnoughts… put titans with the size of a moon why not? This is not eve online, it’s a space ships third person shooter, they cant put a ship 10km long.
But with maps a bit larger, maybe a ship a step larger than a frigate can fit, I think that they should put more variety of ships within the current sizes.
For example: On any faction at lvl 1 we have 1 interceptor, 1 fighter, and 1 frigate, a good addition may be to change this and let us choose between 2 interceptors, 2 fighters and 2 frigates or more, at all levels and factions.
There could be one huge battle cruiser per team, kinda like the command ship for the reconossance(cant spell) game mode only bigger. And it flys around certain maps that have enough space for it. OMG It be like Star Destroyer vs Star Destroyer! epics
I thought about it, and dreads and so forth would be nice, but i think they might break the game with current mechanics, besides its just not balanced.
However, I am looking at the following idea.
Ships can now be upgraded using experience (Like you do with research). Level 2 ships, does not equal tier 2 ships.
Tier 2 variations of the ships, that Have improved stats.
Frigate Tier 1
Assault ship Tier 2 (frigate)
Add two new hull types
Destroyer and cruiser
Destroyer tier 1
Gunboat tier 2 (destroyer)
Cruiser tier 1
Heavy Assault ship (tier 2)
how you get the ships
since the skill tree is being reworked, you simply just add a research field for upper ships. for example
spaceship command (skill) Level 1-5 gives 1% more mobility
