If these new “crafted” ships indeed share all given characteristics with actual premium ships, I propose making other crafted ships premium as well, simply for the sake of continuity.
This are crafted with a completely different system, they aren’t SP ships.
Similar suggestion has already been made. In fact that suggestion is a really awesome one.

But you should know… you were there. : )
How about using Jasan’s suggestion about prestige ships to convert a limited amount of ships to premium status or something?

That could be another option. From gamer point of view it would be the best way to make any ship premium… I mean platinum or whatever. However, from dev side it is a meh cuz it would not make players invest some GSs into these ships.

It just dawned on me. Giving the option of making any ship premium-like with extra cargo bay and synergy increase would lower the value of the current premium ships and that way it would also make them less desirable. From this point of view no wonder that the concept was rejected.
