Biggest mistake when trying to sneak up on someone

So, I’ve been leveling a Jericho LRF and noticed that the vast majority of players completely fail at sneaking up on me, so here it goes:

 

DO. NOT. TARGET. TOO. EARLY.

 

You see, when anyone targets you, the game plays a warning jingle. The game also has a “target who’s targeting me” key (though unbound by default I think). Put these two together.

 

When you are sneaking up on someone, get into position first, then target them as you open fire. This makes the difference between catching your target unaware and Mortar Coils to your face the moment you clear that last asteroid.

Also something to consider, you can change your lock on settings to not lock on unless you tell it too.  That way you can fire away without giving a lock onto a stationary target.  The alternative is constantly cancelling the lock.
