I haven’t played tier 2 for months. And when I did, was because subscribers to my channel requested me to play certain ships (like the Razor, which is quite popular)
The only exception was when the devs tested the veteran “jump one tier” MM where I was playing tier 1 ships in tier 2, just to prove my point.
You can see me farming tier 4 or tier 5, no problem. But I will hardly go to tier 2 if it is not for playing with new guys. I don’t need to farm tier 2 to be honest. Tier 4 is easier to farm. Somehow people don’t understand that.

I am aware that you don’t “need” to. I was also expecting somewhere along the lines, a little hint of how good you are, wich I am more then happy to have read.
Who are the majority? According to the survey, most of them rank themselves as average pilots. This is also why I asked, in a previous post of mine, what is this game’s ambition? what kind of “majority” do they want to attract and what are their actions to reach that goal?
But anyway - back to the survey - In what tier(s) does these pilots play mostly I wonder? And how many battles do they have?
I jump between 3,4,5 but am mostly in 5 and 4 these days, and I do it because of a need of variation and of curiosity to see and experience different kinds of match making balances.
But the survey doesn’t care at all that I have seen a variety of different match making balances over the years, or that I have experienced more than 7000 battles and seen many op builds come and go… I have a lot of things to refer to, and compare to, that new players have not. And from trying different things, I know what elements I like, but then again we are all different but it seems to me that my overthinking mind is not a part of this average “majority” - so what is my opinion worth anyway?
To be honest, losing old players is good. Games will be more balanced if I weren’t playing on them.
But really the problem is that their implementation of mixed tiers is flawed, not that the idea is bad. As you said, they should remove tiers completely, and just work on ranks. Or keep tiers as a reference, but play only with ranks.
So let’s say you have a hangar layout and your maximum ship is rank 10. Then you can play in a game with people with top rank 12, 11 or 10. So essentially you will have a +2-2 rank bracket to play against. That way you can either be top rank or bottom rank, and that will mean that even the hated rank 4-rank 7 and rank 10 will be top rank sometimes, and you will have opportunities to level them.
As it is now, if I play with rank 9 ships, I will ALWAYS be top rank, so I will have a de facto advantage over people with rank 7 and rank 8 ships.
With the system I propose, playing rank 9 could also mean that you are bottom rank vs rank 11 ships. That way people would be encouraged to keep progressing, instead of staying in rank 9.
Because the jump from rank 9 to rank 10 is abysmal. In rank 12 to rank 13 the jump is almost non existent, because a rank 12 ship is as good or even better than some other rank 15 ships.
±2 rank is way too much in the lower tiers, but they should rework the implants as well. Also the realistic battles start from R10. They should remove the realistic battles from the games, where not all the players have the 4 ships, and only give realistic games in the current T5. Also since the T5 is not kindergarden, they should remove the squad restriction from the current T5. The only reason why I’m missing the old SQ is the squadding.
But the way how they working doesn’t helps a lot. Make some changes without test… and hope the best…

Would also be awesome, if they would remove the restrictions of squads who have the same corporation in t5. It’s stupid because you can bypass it by having a squad leader who is in another corp. I wish i could more easily get fast games by fighting my friends. Without this stone in the way.

I flew the Razor, the Crus Q, the Scout, the Kalah, the Superkite, and the Trooper. In fact I made a video of the razor, which you can watch at my youtube channel. It is in spanish but you can believe me when I say that I was literally apologizing for playing it, and scoring like 20 kills every match.
But two guys requested me to do a video on the razor, so I delivered.
The rest of the ships I flew them because some guys in the Genesis Spanish corp wanted to fly with me and learn to play, mostly guards and lrf (not sniping)

After a rework ±2 works, but just if in a game you only can have 3different rank. And forget the GS ships -1rank BS.
Interesting idea, but I’m not sure the game has the player pop and dev resources to support that. Last night I was on and kept getting the same group of 6-10 people (sometimes 2v2 with bots, and the rest were in a different match).
What happens if there are a limited number of r4, r6,and r8 people on? Does the r6 play with r4,or with r8? It’s implementable, but probably not worth it over other things that could be fixed / implemented.

That is effectively shutting them out of any other tier (which would be stupid), since they have no reason to fight against better equipped ships. It’s the same with bots in t3. It is shutting vets out of this tier, and I am totally against it.

I knew someone would say that. Vets have spent time and effort levelling. They should not be then penalised for it, and be forced to play t5.
By all means introduce a levelling synergy bonus or something, which would help newer pilots level up their ships quicker, or some kind of survivability bonus like totally new pilot get in t1.

Probably not a very good idea, but would reduce grind and increase accessibility for new players.
