Basic or Expert controls?

Hey fellows!

Title says everything, which mode are you using? Expert seems the way to go for me, I dont like my ship going crazy when I am in dogfight and putting my cursor in the corner of my screen.

So, what mode are you using?

Whats the differance ?

Expert locks your mouse cursor to only the small area in front of your screen, in which you start turning from there. Basic means you can move your mouse anywhere and your ship will reorient towards that facing.

I’m using basic because our guns are turrets and they aren’t restricted to facing forward to shoot.

Basic allow you to control camera, you can look behind you, and the ship will follow the cursor.

Expert is a mode where you only control the ship, you can’t look behind you, the ship will go in the direction the cursor is pointing.

Using basic too, it helps a lot if you are fighting against faster targets. Otherwise they would just sit on your back without being able to do anything.

Edit: Basic and expert are pretty much the same the only difference is how much you can move the mouse. The ship will always go in the pointer direction but having the mouse movement limited help avoiding “strange” movements if you can’t control your mouse properly.

I have tried playing Expert many, many times and I find it to be incredibly detrimental to playing the game.  Sure, if you’re going forward it gives you a bit more maneuverability but if you’re in a dog-fight the other guy is going to win.

Expert basically just prevents you from swinging your guns outside your forward arc.

Why is that called “expert” then? Ability to aim elsewhere while moving to anohter direction is in my opinion important. Option that lesens this ability sound more like “handicap” than “expert”.

Or did I get this wrong?

I use basic as well, between having a larger arc of fire and the ships being far more manoeuvrable in basic mode (to the extent that switching to expert just feels sluggish) I see no reason whatsoever to want to use expert.

I agree with Fronx, that naming sure does seem odd.

basic…as was mentioned, guns appear to be on turrets with 360 degree rotation, so why challenge myself needlessly, playing against people is hard enough, why handicap oneself?

interceptor or fighters might benefit from expert mode because its easier to manuever by strafe maybe because it locks your camera in a single direction you are turning and shooting in the same direction

ahhh how do i say it

um like… idk

I suppose I could see one good use for expert flight mode, and that is when using an Empire fighter in overdrive with the turn speed implant. Your turn speed gets buffed so high your fighter has difficulty trying to decide how it wants to turn in a dogfight, and ends up overcorrecting or changing its mind, causing you to swim like a drunken fish. This is actually really handy to evade enemy fire but it does cause you to slam into things occassionally.

Of course, I wouldn’t set a whole mode simply for those eighteen seconds. It’d be nice if you could hotswap between basic and expert with a button for this purpose. Maybe also rename them to be, in honor of Star Fox, “All-Range” and “Forward Only”.

Expert gives me more control over manoeuvres - especially in a tight spots or around asteroids or other big objects (hiding in those corridors and so on). It also feel better for me because it’s closer to have a cockpit instead of 3rd person view. In expert you can also look around and to your back pretty easily (check your key bindings) - but indeed - you can’t shoot behind you.

So, yeah - I use expert mode almost all the time - but then I fly almost exclusively fighters and interceptors. Frigates are too bulky to fit my play style.

I’m sincerely hope that is actually a bug and will be fixed soon

I think this “expert mode” and “basic mode” should be just a button that you toggle or keep pressed during a game.

Just like the freelook button.

So that if you press a button, you are using expert mode. Push again, and youre in basic mode. (or keep pressed).

It just sounds like something that is so situational, that it should be a keybind feature.

The expert control mode also has a feature that auto-aligns you to the horizon if you are not actively maneuvering, just another interesting tidbit.

I think so too!

maybe the expert  mode is designed to be used in synchronization with the free aiming?
