It would be nice to see (visuals) how the hull gets damaged according it looses its integrity. That would be modifications to the original hull shape at 75%, 50% and 25% (could be other percentages and more/less damage shapes) according to textures/geometry and maybe some fire or spark effects. The idea is to have the lowest impact in performance (it could be an on/off graphics setting) and add some realism about a piece of metal getting hit hard.

They won’t do it. I asked for this long time ago.
Reason? It’s simple. More details means more resources and stress on older computers.
Yes, please don’t add this, or my poor little laptop will commit suicide

It is not about the client systems.
This would mean more data tracking for the odviously poor servers.
This is why there are about 2 astroids that move dynamicly per map.

The way OP suggested is using different textures for different hull levels which can be done client-side. During battle client already gets required information (hull integrity of ships in battle)
i doubt, the OP wants “physical realistic deformations”, so it would be basicly just cosmetic appearance, right?
However, I think most of the time, we don’t really see our models so closely, that it would really matter to have different textures or deformations; I do agree tho, that adding new particle effects, physX effects or other cosmetic stuff, which is purely client side, would be a nice expansion - little explosions, small debris flying out, maybe even some deformations for people who have really too much RAM…
I personally would love the debris part. Just like the typical Serenity movie scene of Mal asking “what was that?” when the ship looses some module from the hull.
More cineastic explosions, too, even if I love the current ones. Smoke and fire effects. As long as it is really just for the feeling.
But. I don’t see that as something which is necessary atm. Such things would need additional testing for different client configurations, modelling efforts spent, which is ultimately again time and money wasted into these resources, new bugs introduced, etc.
I’d rather see more development on the current models and levels. I love the old levels, I want to see more of simple, but brilliant designs; I love the lightweight and fast engine. I’d rather see it grow into it’s full potential with the current graphics, than more graphics. In a way, I even dislike many of the new maps, because they introduce so many models, but have bad hitboxes or would need more refinement in level design. Some stuff from Open Space also seems a bit too comicy for me; but that’s just me. I like the ships how they are, it’s the surroundings which could become better…
So I like the OPs idea basicly, but I do not see it to be something which is urgent in any way. Maybe, if we have millions of players.
Yes please. Simple sparks, little smoke and fire could do the trick and add more immersion to the picture below:
1 point of hull integrity, yet my ship shines fabulously.

It is a DE, what did you expect
Add it but add the ability to turn it off.
Everyone is happy.
End of Story
Well, It should at least be done on a Defiler within Special Ops to demonstrate the game engine ability.
Also, explosion should deal damage as well.
Come on, at least put some realism in it.
this will not make it to the game in order to keep requirements low

That is a good suggestion.
Also it could be setup that you could have particles, but they would show just on your ship. So you can see particles or particle emiters coming off other ships, just your own.
This could give the leaking hydrogen look, or the bullet holes…
Other players would not be able to see it on your ship.
No server side requirements. At all.
A toggle switch fixes everything graphical, you know. On means better graphics for better computers, off means normal graphics for normal computers. Slow computers will be slow no matter what.
The suggestion is known, but if it ever gets added will take some time. Each ship would need to be adjusted and this would take some decent amount of time.
