It would be a very nice little Quality Of Life improvement if containers you drop in OS (manually, rather than when your ship gets destroyed) were somehow marked as such. Give it a yellow glow perhaps, similar to how those dropped when you die glow green. Or rename it to something like “Container (Dropped)”.
