I suppose, you still have your discs and code for your old windows, so why not
(otherwise, try to obtain the disc and the number)
after all, it seems windows 10 is the last windows anyway for a while; they will start rolling updates. there is no business in box sold operating systems soon (or already? i think macos and linux made them lose that income) anyway. so it makes sense to see windows 10 as windows 1.0 finally.
keeping your personal data apart from the computers OS and programs is anyway your own task, as long as you have maintained that, all you risk is reinstalling your old windows if it does not work out yet. otherwise win10 looks like a decent product, and finally, microsoft decided on a personal-user-friendly business plan.
Expect bugs, until they release some updates tho
On a second note, read thisforbes article, which explains which users can truly upgrade to windows 10 (for free) - or wait until end of july and upgrade after release to be sure
Because the beta allows you to upgrade from windowses which are not really aligible to the free upgrade (Vista, etc.)
I tested it at work. It’s nothing special but I will get it anyway because it’s free. GG Microsoft your plan worked.
yup i am thinking im gonna get it. i heard u can roll back and i love windows 7 so i think it outta be safe.

So does that mean that I can upgrade up to 1 year after the release and still have a valid copy with serial number of Win 10? Currently I have Win 8.1 (my first true copy windows in 25 years!!)
Dunno, probably i will upgrade to 10 but the whole “subscription” thingy to get updates doesn’t really sound good to me.
Anyway, there are no other options so…

what subscription thingy?
i feel like for security updates, i can get 3rd party software.

Yes, but with caveats, the forbes article i linked leads to other articles explaining the future plans.
Windows will become a service, rather than releasing new windows every year, they will do it like apple does, create only new licenses you have to obtain, if they have a reason for it. So basicly, they will have later charges, but not in the foreseeable future, and much more likely because the new update simply is a new milestone. Similar to MacOSX, you probably only dont get an upgrade, once your hardware is out of fashion; We all know M$, so distrust is certainly there
They might even tend to go the other route, if there is a new OS war - which largely is not yet predictable but certainly possible - and go open source with it at some point, only charging for services. Depends largely how they will handle on the server side of business.
Microsoft is out of options. They now know they have to innovate.
But certainly, they will not stop to try to charge you for money in the future, no matter how sweet the deal is.
Win 8.1 - if not enterprise edition - can upgrade to a full windows 10 license until 1 year after release, yes.
The beta however allows you to upgrade windowses, which are not licensed after release, and they will have to pay or reinstall.
Note however, Forbes is not always FUD-Free, so don’t take every word as existing promise, if you read their articles.

Good luck with that… sadly.
I believed in Holy Gabe, but he fooled me.

ah yeah the steam os was kinda a disappointment.
I will be processing the upgrade on all my systems.
The beta tested well. The interface isn’t something people will yell at. It worked stable for me in a virtual machine. I guess I didn’t play any games. Was really just install antivirus, browse Internet use for work for a few days…
Most importantly it will get you updates past 2020.
Honestly 8 isn’t a bad OS, it just isn’t mouse friendly.
Also my guess is windows 7 will only get you IE 11. I haven’t bother to research this yet. Course they are ‘stopping’ IE, calling it something else I had forgotten what. Who doesn’t use chrome now?

IE = Infernal Errors
