Which is best for fighters—Nanocomposite Coating, or Repair Kit?

When stuck between one or the other, which do you find to be most useful?  I’ve heard arguments for both, but I’d like to get a community-wide consensus of which is more effective.  Feel free to discuss class advantages here, but for simplicity, assume that one (or both) of these modules is equipped.  I know Jeri is more unlikely to carry either, but I’m sure it’d be interesting to look at the combinations.

if you operate under buffs or you work outside range and return for heals.

i use repairs on my recon because i operate outside heals and patch myself up as i run back for heals after getting EB’d

resis also makes the dubious assumption that you know exactly when you are going to get shot. on an attack run maybe but the majority of the time you’re just taking hits by surprise.

assuming you are hull tanking, your shield is probably just a ruse and will disappear in half a second so that isn’t much of an early warning. but if you do have decent shields … Res maybe.

Repair kit all the way, if used correctly, will allow you to survive longer in game. Although I used to both module, after I tweaked my resistance according to my combat log, repair kit allowed me to last longer in battle. I switched nanocomposite for combat reboot insted. I like to see the repair kit as a kind of ‘‘regen’’ for your ship, it all depend on how many time per game you can use it. I usualy heal my self for more than 6k HP in each game…

Unless I am flying an engi, I always use a repair kit.

I say repair kit because it’s more consistent.

Like Kine said, you need the presence-of-mind to know that you’re going to be taking several thousand damage in the next 8 seconds and while you’re taking that damage, that your HP holds out.

Also there’s the fact that if you have decent resistances built in with passive modules/implants, you’re cutting into the effectiveness of your coating due to the diminishing return nature of resist buffs.

And outside of having an engie or overly slow regen coating, having only the nano-buff means you’re now stuck with that low HP until you do find heals if you managed to survive.

When you’re in a squad that you know will have an Engineer on hand and you feel confidant in your ability to pop it when under stress and you build your passives so you gain appreciable buffs when you do use it, Nanocomposite is the way to go.

However if you want a panic button heal that doesn’t require much more than reflex or you’re flying solo, repair kit is better.

Also having both sounds impractical, 2 survival modules just for taking hull damage with only two role modules cuts into your ability to contribute outside of being a damage sponge unless it’s something like frontline Empire Command shenanigans.

Repair kit because hull resistances are very easy to get with both hull and shield modules, also Gigas II and boosters.

repair kit. you want half decent resist on your hull anyway so with nano coating the addition damage reduction past 50% is not much

Repair kit, because Engys dont always turn on there heals!

Repair kit without any doubt. On a tackler possibly both.

Repair kit, because Engys dont always turn on there heals!

Hey Hey  dang gone ECM’s are constantly turning them off.   So when us lowly engineers are busy fly swatting we sometimes need a gentle reminder…

+1 for Repair kit saves my life MANY times

And then there are those that just does’t heal you yes…

I say repair kit because it’s more consistent.

i have both nanocomposite coating and repair kit on my phobos

Repair Kit, because some engineers just can’t be arsed to heal you, and the thing guarantees longevity when operating beyond allied lines. In a normal situation, I’d rather be able to get those hit points back, instead of simply becoming harder to kill - damage resistance can only do so much.

I always tried to play without multipurpose, maybe using flares, but none of this easy mode repair or resist stuff. But the game basically forces you to use them, especially on interceptors. Engies are in a good place, you have so many good class specific modules you have to choose between them and not thinking about multipurpose (of course you have your own heals, but still, imagine a Styx if you had only 3 useful engineering module, oh the pain!), similar with Jerry Commands, you just fill your active slots with the class modules because all are very useful. Recons are in a good place, you usually use 2 or 3 of the class modules, and the rest can be survival, now imagine if they got 1-2 more good modules and you would have to choose from those. Multipurpose should not be in the game for my tastes.

nanocomposite may or may not mitigate damage for a short period

repair however creates something, which does not time out

i therefore rather compare nano to flares, in terms of a fitting decision and the only ship i have with a nano on, the DE, has a healing too, so it never replaces the “primary survival module”, which is either kit or booster for me.
