theres a button near ur friends list and it will flash if there is a poll availiable, so it will get ur attention, u should expect 1 every month or so and it gives u 10 gold standards
So yeah, don’t count on that 
But there are various promotions on GS. For example i got about 25k GS for 25 Eur on steam DLC promotion, and after that 6 months premium for 50% GS, makes it 3.5k GS if i’m not wrong. In the end, that was about 10 euros for 6 months premium. Not bad at all.
