That’s how I now defend against ships? During these 1.5 seconds makes the 1000m and my lasers are provided with a curved lens 2200m (Trex mk2).

shoot it into obstacles, it will detonate on impact even if 1.5 sec haven’t passed yet.
You can still launch a Torp directly into ships especially Frigates. Otherwise use mines for close range defence.
As mentioned shooting into a nearby asteroid or whatever works if enemy is near
