To Steam or not to Steam?

I have seen that I can have this game as a Steam game and play Star-Conflict through there. I figured it won’t take a lot to do that I’ll only have to uninstall my current Star-Conflict client and data files, find it on Steam click add, wait for it to download, startup the game and spend 10 mins redoing all my preferred settings. The question is Why Bother?  I would like to know the possible benefits of playing via Steam and the cons of playing via Steam.

Cheers

Benefits are the same as any other game, if you don’t use Steam - whats a point of using it for 1 game, most of the people that do use Steam have a lot of games, and it keeps it organized plus extra stuff (trading carts, steam customization unlocks) available through steam games.

To be fair i remember on Christmas one of my Corp dudes, gave me a “unlock” thingy that only works on steam, it gave me permanent free “snow-ice” custom color pattern that i can use on any sheep (except DLCs of course) unlimited times, and i think, a sticker. Not sure if such presents were accessible via regular client.

Well, Since it was on Cristmas…

look up SantaClaus[NASA] guy, not sure if he has any left though - free stuff running fast.

No login needed, and it’s integrated into steam with all the goodies (working overlay, automatic updates and whatever).

ok :stuck_out_tongue: hope hes generous to “ousiders”(other than NASA members) or i might haf to join! now you wouldnt want that because ill b messing up corp chat and TS since ill b asking so many questions and stuff

The Gaijin store is a huge rip-off compared to Steam prices (at least if it prices you in EUR) so that’s one possible reason for installing via Steam. For actually playing via Steam, there is no benefit unless you like the Steam overlay I guess.

One of the first requirements to join NASA is a sense of humor, sorry but so far i don’t see much

The prices in USD are the same on Steam vs. Gaijin Store. You do have one benefit with a linked Gaijin-Steam account if you buy DLC’s when they are sale. The Elite Pilot package gives you the most GS for your money (when they are 50% off as they usually are when on sale) and with the two ways of purchasing it you can buy it twice.

For EUR the Gaijin store prices you EUR = USD which means they overprice by nearly 40%. In comparison, Steam only overprices by about 6% so that’s better.

From my experience steam is very bad, and in some games u need to login two times!! one for steam and another for the game. Another inconvenient is when steam servers have an issue, so… i dont see any advantage of playing in steam

Don’t get me wrong I hate Steam too. The games I play incl. Star Conflict don’t rely on Steam to be working to play online as they use another gaming network.

With Star Conflict you can link you Steam account with you Gaijin account and you can always login without steam.

Well yeah, these are not true for this game, so what are you suggesting?

Mainly if you want to buy DLC’s when they are on sale, or you need to redeem a code or something. Also if Steam has problems and you can’t connect to the game (sometimes it happens) you can just launch the game from the game’s directory manually to bypass steam auto login. Or you can even make a shortcut to the .exe and never use Steam, unless you need it to buy something. So there’s nothing to lose if you go with it.

It doesn’t matter if oyu play this game through Steam or via the direct game client. I would suggest to play with the game client, provided by gaijin, since Steam sometimes has server issues which will prevent you from playing the game.

actually, i disliked apps which run next to my stuff for years, and hated the fact that i had to install steam for counterstrike.

steam however turned out to be something, which is rather genius over the years. yes, sometimes glitches, but in general, they have good prices, and they enable you to redownload your games fast on a new machine.

last time i just copied the steam folder into a complete new windows machine, without installing. every game since then worked right. it re-setup all the registry stuff, which took a while, but after that, just play.

you can run the game client downloaded by steam manually for manual login, as all standalone games the game is located in steam\steamapps\common.

so no matter if you install it via steam, make sure you know email and password for this game, since, in the last couple weeks, there have been authentication failures sometimes with steam; then you can login via running the game outside of steam manually (by going into the folder and running the game exe).

one thing for sure: i rather support steam than “origin” from EA. compared to that, steam is awesome.
