Tier 3 8v8 Tournament - 11-9-13

  1. No. Maps should be the same for the involved teams, but not the same throughout the entire tournament. This breaks the monotony and gives BOTH sides something new to think of. Ie, team 1 & 2, 3 & 4 play on the same map. Teams 2 & 3 win, their match should be done on a different map… And so forth… So, as to avoid boredom from everyone, maps SHOULD be swapped around every now & then.

  1. No. If people have played on almost every map before, they’ll know how to fly in them and, along with the guidance of their squad leader, are able to fly just fine in them.

  1. This I can agree with. But not for ship swapping. The way you enter the Room is what defines which ships you bring out. One by one, from both teams. That gives you enough time to think about which setups to bring.
  1. hmmm, well it doesn’t make sense that we never played NASA in Devils Jaw , reason for changing maps was to avoid giving an advantage to team who plays on the map more,

  1. shouldn’t be a problem to release map info early, your team is an empire based mindset = damage, ours is fed = maneuvering we prefer to know the maps early

  1. we have ship swapped in our first tournament, and Phobias was aware , so i disagree with locking the ships everyone should be able to change their ships from match to match

  1. I think maps should be changed when advancing to the next stage of tournament (you can for example have set map for each stage, so every team plays same maps depending on a stage, i.e. 1/8 - Devils Jaw, 1/4 -Anomaly)

  2. In the same way as Error is doing a poll on maps for tournament, you can decide on a MAP pool for example 3-4 maps that everyone agrees on, so every team knows in advance and can practice and come up with strategies. While i partially agree with Oryngton that everyone should know map layouts by heart by now, but no one is flying in 8 man teams in arcade.

  3. I agree, different tactics call for different ships+builds on different players. But all of this have to be done between matches, and if you have joined a lobby and enemy team is already there, no backing up to change. Everything has to be done during the break and join in a full team into the lobby. but no longer then 5-10 minutes, game plans have to be pre made on practices matches.

  1. Almost all maps are available in T2, so I see no reason not to be used to them all by the time you get to T3.

  1. No.

  1. Well, then do what I said on my previous post, enter one at a time, have them tell their COs which ships the enemy has so far, so both teams can adjust their layouts.

Application of tactics. Coordinating the entire team is up to the commander’s job. Individual pilots are there to provide info on things the commander can’t see 24/7 and obey orders. Personal initiative is a 50/50 gamble, depending on who you drag along to support your flight.

You can develope possible tactics sitting in hangar discussing things, but you will never perfect them with no actual hands on experience of full team command + all his pilots. There are enough maps to create different tactics depending on a map. Frankly i believe there are very bad maps for the tournament setting and there are very good ones. I see zero problem deciding what maps are most fun for tournament settings and just play on these maps, not necessary revealing what team plays who on what map weeks in advance, but certainty in map rotation for dedicated teams will produce more tactical gameplay.

OK if there was an even number of teams (ET’s team had to back out due to real life issues) then matches would have been on the same map, and switched for the second round. As it was there was only 3 teams, so we had to go to a Double Elimination. So NASA & STEEL fought first, and winner moved to play R4ge. So since NASA had just played 2 games on that map I switched it to be fair to R4ge, etc… If there had been 4 teams then both matches would have been on the same map, and then a new map would have been used for round 2.

I do like 1ace1’s suggestion for 1 map for the whole tournament. We will use Ancient Ruins as long as the team Captains are all fine with that. The tournament following this one we will use a different map. I might even put up a poll to see which one everyone would prefer. So I suggest teams start practicing Capture the Beacons on Ancient Ruins so they are ready for the tournament.

There is no rule against switching ships between each game. You can also swap players if you wish. This has gone pretty smoothly so far (except in the beginning when I made the password too complex). As long as these swaps are done in a timely manner I have no problem with them. Also, we will be using a 3 minute break between each game, so this gives teams a chance to discuss what they did right, what they did wrong, what they need to change, and to swap out ships & players if need be.

I can only assume you mean November 9th, bear in mind not everyone uses USA date format!

Yes it is November 9th. Sorry I keep forgetting that most of the world uses Day, Month, Year format. Next time I will try and remember to put the 3 letter abbreviation for the month to avoid confusion.

You are right that certain maps just aren’t really Tournament worthy. The 4 we have used so far are Dreadnought Debris, Devil’s Jaw, Ancient Ruins, and I can’t think of what the other one was called, but I thought it was a different map when I chose it. I wasn’t a fan of the layout of that one.

Again…

YOU HAVE MY AXE!

And my kite!

Hopefully we can make it with our team this time. If not, we’ll be there the time after.

And we will Stream, promised!

Like I said, get everyone in the team to record and I’ll edit it. I just need someone to get me an intro scene and name tags so I can put those on the screen to identify who’s who.

You will be able to download the videos straight from Twitch in 30 minute segments. There’s a few guides out there that explain how this can be achieved. Unfortunately I can’t easily record and live Stream at the same time. Or I could, but I’d rather stream at the highest possible quality instead.

My team will re-attempt to be there.

Right now we can’t make any promises, it depends on how things play out. We’d have loved to be there last time, we had recording/streaming set up and ready and an incredibly strong team but real life hit us quite hard.

Worst case if my team cannot make it, I will try to be there to spectate and stream the matches as I did during the official tournament. Again, I cannot make any promises until a little closer to the event.

My sincerest apologies to everyone who participated, and especially to those who were registered on Evil’s team. Given my propensity for having the most horrendous timing, I will also wait until a little closer to the event before confirming my status.

With luck, next time I am volunteered for team captain I won’t have to visit the hospital.

If you willingly volunteer to be a captain of a “EvilTactician and company” team, you must have a check up at least in one institution

That’d be the idea, overall. I still need the video from all participants so I can make a decent thing out of it all.

If we’re bringing faction characteristics into team profiles, may I say that Empire is known for its Engineers and Recons?

At the original question though, I see no problem deciding ahead of time which maps to play on. There are only so many maps. Those who have clocked thousands of games will have experience on every map, hundreds of times over.

If anything, it will give us the opportunity to show others where our true strength lies. Theory and practice is one thing, but you can never predict every factor, every moment of a battle. I would tell my pilots to master the fundamentals, gain that confidence, learn map awareness, and trust in your wingmen. Fluidity ultimately trumps rote.

See, that’s the problem. Empire is known for its Recons, Gunships and LRFs. However, people only go for Empire for the ECMs, Recons and Engineers. And that’s bad.

I wouldn’t be so sure of that. Those gunships are killers. I disengage when I see one, pride be damned. It’s like the staple ship of rating hunters.

There’s also a massive difference between a good Empire LRF and a great one. They’re few and far between, but they can change the entire pace of the game. I’ve had the pleasure of working with some who truly exploit my Recon’s sensor range, and one individual in particular who doesn’t even need HUD indicators to snipe at maximum range. I only mentioned the other two classes since they’re the most recognizable and spoken about.

Last night i got sniped mid microwarp on my sai(EB ftw) by one close-tester ESB guy, and i know it wasn’t “lucky collision” he was aiming at me the whole time. Granted it wasn’t 90deg angle but i sure was not going straight into his face to have 0 angle.

Empire Gunships are tanky, but I’ve seen plenty prefer Federate ones instead, for the massive mobility boost they have. Same deal for the Engies, people want SOLELY Imperial ones because they have twice/thrice the survivability, despite the magnificent loss in mobility.

Because of this, this SOLE reason, people prefer Empire ships: tank.

I apologize to everyone for not making the tournament. My CPU died in my PC Friday, and I just go a new one today. I’d like to have the tournament this coming Saturday November 16th if everyone is OK with that.
