Okay, I could be wrong, but let’s just wade on this whole “NASA bashing” stuff…
First and foremost, I’m saying this as an ex-NASA pilot who jumped ship to WPK 2.0 because they took most of the European NASA pilots, and it made sense for me to be in a Corp with people who share my time zone. I also think I’ve been around long enough to be one of the old guard. I’m also able to recall when WPK was mostly comprised of T2 pilots with more aspiration than skill.
So, the reason I think there is NASA bashing in WPK, and indeed WPK bashing in NASA, is very simple.
- For a while, they were the same Corp. This naturally creates a certain sense of closeness and camaraderie. However, that same ‘closeness’ doesn’t work the same way when they split. Rather than bringing the Corps together, it creates rivalry.
- For the most part, skill level is very close between the two. That creates competition. NASA pilots want to prove they are better than their European counterparts, while as an EU Corp WPK will gladly remind the Yanks which continent is superior. NASA wants to show that they’re still a strong corp, while WPK has incentive to carve a name for itself by making their old corp look inferior. This competition can show itself in both positive and negative ways, but the negative ones always show through more prominently.
- As both have been Empire for most of their time in Sector Conquest, even as allies they’ve been competing for reward and resource. This creates a negative relationship - if NASA wins battles it means there’s a greater chance WPK won’t get the sector they want, and vice versa. NASA has now jumped ship to the Federation, but that core dynamic still exists to an extent.
- Finally, misunderstanding. Written communication often fails to express subtle meaning. Face to face you can read body language and tone of voice and tell whether what was said was a genuine insult or playfully poking fun. That doesn’t happen so much with just the words used, and when you have people who are not native English speakers using or reading English to convey their meaning, potential for misunderstanding increases.
So, is there a rivalry between NASA and WPK? Absolutely! But I don’t think it’s as negative or damaging as some people think. There are bound to be a few people on either side who need to grow up or shut up, but for the most part it seems that a lot of the “hate” between these two Corporations is just people seeing insults where there are none.
In closing, the next time you see a WPK pilot insulting NASA, or a NASA pilot insulting WPK, remember that these two corporations are like brother and sister to one another. Anyone who isn’t an only child should know exactly what that means. We are going to argue, we are going to fight, and we are never, ever going to share our toys without having first screamed the house down. But that’s not the same thing as hating each other or being enemies.
