Before patch 0.9 (when we could see a rank progress bar), I was well through rank 5 and closing in on rank 6. I have played a ton of hours since then. I’m still rank 5. I cannot get the 6th implant. Since the 0.9 patch, I’ve spent enough time to max synergy on three T1 ships, get a bunch more synergy in T2 ships. I’m still rank 5, and I see no indicator of why I’m not 6 already.

I see that Machete AE to Machete S requires 6 synergy on Machete AE. Getting rank 6 will have something to do with getting enough synergy on Machete AE. I’m not sure I have to actually buy Machete S to get the rank yet. I’ll know some time today. This would have been faster if I had just focused on one ship instead of playing with three T1’s and three T2’s.
Update: I did have to buy Machete S to get the 6th rank and enable the 6th implant.
You do realize that any implant needs a ship of at least the same rank to work? A rank 6 implant is not active when you use a rank 5 or lower ship.

It seems like it would be shafting the players if it’s not tier based. Like, implants 4, 5 and 6 should work with any T2 ship. I have the 7th implant, but I’m not using a T3 ship which I bought. I’d like to know for sure. Is this stuff about when implants work/don’t work documented somewhere?
Try it for yourself. E.g. I have the rank 6 Jericho implant that increases projectile speed. My Swift’s (rank 4) weapon does not receive the effect, my Swift Mk 3’s (rank 6) weapon does.

I can confirm this for you - implants are tied to the rank of your ships.
E.g. to have a rank 6 implant work you need a rank 6 (or above) ship.
A rank 4 ship would only benefit from your implants of rank 1, 2, 3 and 4. This is not ‘shafting’ players - if you have access to a rank 3 implant than you can fly rank 3 ships and should ideally do so. The rank 1 and 2 ships are weaker anyway.
