[Series] Star Conflict - Stellar Supremacy

I’ve done that with all my vids, so far (with Bandicam). I see no reason for anyone else to not do the same. Youtube already places overlay images of your avatar and profile there, so meh…

It’s quick and dirty… that’s why I do it this way. No downtime on my system which is something I like.

Trade off is lower quality really, since with for example fraps you rawcap and then compress for upload through rendering whereas with OBS it’s compressing as it goes.

EDIT: I guess I will make a video or something for it…

Youtube renders everything uploaded, no matter how compressed it was before.  The only thing you save is your own bandwidth, not final quality.  One guy actually uploaded a video, downloaded, and uploaded it again a couple hundred times just to show the distortion that youtube adds.

You’ll have the same quality loss effect when you repeatedly edit and save JPEG or any other lossy media format.

Yes, but youtube doesn’t handle a well compressed file and attempts to compress it further.  Their machine acts like a human and compresses more without double checking like most humans.

Hi guys, I’m thinking about doing some videos for the spanish community, in order to promote the game and teach some basics. But I have a problem. I have Windows XP and the OBS doesn’t support it.

I can’t install other SO because I have some programs I need for my job installed, and they won’t work in 7 or 8.1 (well, I would need to buy a new license, which is quite expensive)

Which program will you recommend? I don’t have a dedicated capture card, but I have a GTX 660 which I think it has power enough to capture by itself. But I’m a total Ace in this matters.

Any advice?

Bandicam/Fraps. 'nuff said. You don’t even have to pay for it, that’s the beauty of it.

ShadowPlay. Your GTX 660 should produce neatless 60 FPS videos in full detail, if you use the lowest setting around 1 GB for 10 minutes - and you won’t feel it at all, even on more demanding games. You have to set Star Conflict to “Full Screen” instead of “Stretched Window Fullscreen”, and setup ShadowPlay in GeForce Experience (I would set it to manual mode, making you able to record with ALT+F9, and disable the camera feed)

The video is encoded right on the Video card, using the 3d information to optimize encoding, making it almost perfect. Editing is more the problem, because the codec used is proprietary mp4 - and no free windows movie renderer except blender can use it, but if you got some pro editing software like Vegas, or a linux machine with kdenlive or similar, or an apple with iMovie, that is also no problem.

There is only one reason not to use shadowplay atm., and that is, if you want to have more than one sound track (e.g. separate tracks for teamspeak) or record windowed gameplay.

Rly, if you have a GeForce 6xx or higher, and you don’t try shadowplay, you miss the biggest surprise. I used OBS before I found the software watching jackfrags on youtube.

ShadowPlay if you can, otherwise I would recommend Bandicam. I use it myself everyday.

Well, from my perspective and with the LP style of videos that I do, Shadowplay is a bit unreliable for me at the moment. If it’s only SC videos you want to do and it works with SC then sure, by all means have fun.

As for rendering, the nature of my videos is basically “record, render, upload”. By making small file sizes with OBS I eliminate the need to render at the loss of some quality.

The videos you see for SC on my channel are created using this method.

The pros are that the video is ready to upload as soon as I’m done recording, allowing time to be spent on video thumbnails or creation of another video… it frees time up I guess is the main thing. Also, OBS is free to use, so if you can use it… you’re in business… for free!

Cons would be that there is unquestionably a loss of quality. You need decent hardware otherwise you end up with frame skipping (why I had to lower to 720p from 1080p when doing War Thunder videos) and the files aren’t usable in video editing software due to some fucked up mp4 codec I guess.

My personal advice would be to seek out a method you like and stick to it unless you want to go outside your comfort zone. As for using professional video software… if you pay for it you’re an idiot and deserve slapped with a fish. There is always a free alternative you should use… seek it out. I would have nothing against buying it if it wasn’t so criminally expensive.

Recording software? I would use DXTory, it’s basically a better version of fraps. Bandicam I used briefly before deciding it was horrible and using fraps… until DXTory showed it’s true dominance in the recording software space.

My thoughts on Shadowplay in conclusion though, are as follows:

If ShadowPlay becomes somewhat open source and allows programs such as DXTory or OBS to use it as their hook, ShadowPlay will be the be all and end all for people who are wanting to put video on the internet of games. No questions asked.

Shots fired, AMD!

To get somewhat back on topic, I’ve just been messing around with some WPK guys to get a feel for how to play in this rather unfair matchmaker… although I suppose any skill based system will always give you unfair battles if the pool of players is relatively low.

Hopefully more people join this game and we can see a better MM’er. I have been trying to spread the word as much as possible but where I think this would really gain playerbase is through the EVE community… I have no account over there though so someone in this thread posting over there about this game would probably help increase playerbase.

Just saying ^^

The only question I would have is how large are your files? My files for 30 minutes of 720p gameplay in SC could be about 1GB-2GB. Usually 1GB though.

If Bandicam is doing what I think it’s doing, which is recording losslessly… you are wasting a lot of upload time, assuming you’re not on fibre. If you’re on fibre connection then it’s not so bad but still, a lot of time spent uploading needlessly ^^

12mins @ 1080p: 2.6Gb, you can see the quality on jewtube. Granted it’s been a little distorted by them, but the raw files are very impressive, imo.

That sounds about right in terms of file size for compression. The issue with distortion is faced by everyone I think.

@Joppsta: eve had already a lot of talk about SC in the past, they even posted a review on themittani. It might be a good game for people who actually want something in eve, which eve does not provide, but basicly, both games have very different feel in terms of gameplay. apples and oranges. in space.

I think shadowplay lacks the option to add a branding in the start, otherwise your workflow describes exactly what i did when i recorded with it. i had also no problem editing it. but OBS had the downside of a performance impact, even on SC, which was notable, especially since the game looks just better in 60FPS videos, because of the visual effects, and it just didn’t cut it for me to be used while flying an interceptor. u even tried it?

does sound acceptable for a file size. how much fps u record?

I average 2 GB for 10 minutes of recording. When I upload anything, I will cut it down.

Been a bit lazy and procrastinating making more videos… mainly seeking knowledge and getting to know SC a bit better.

I was also trying to think of ways to better promote this game. I might start flying a Star Conflict signature over on War Thunder so it maybe drives people towards joining this game, although not sure how the moderation team over there would react to that ^^

Can’t remember if I posted episode 8 but here is episode 9!

I did that in wargamming forums, but It was against the rules, so in two days I got my signature removed. But you can try XD
