PVP/Graphics - FPS on certain maps or at certain times during missions

  1. Description of the problem, what happened.

30-35 FPS drop when on PVP missions for some maps. This started happening about a week ago. “Alpha-7 Complex” map was the worst thus far in terms of FPS drop.

  1. What did you expected to happen.

Smooth 60-78 FPS gameplay.

  1. The conditions during the situation.

8v8 Alpha-7 Complex. I was flying the Templar AE. Combat Recon was the mission type. Game ended 23.10.2015 15:28:05

  1. Further details on the issue.

I have tried max game graphics settings and minimal game graphics settings with no change in performance.

  1. Frequency of occurrence.

This happens infrequently, meaning I can not easily reproduce it. It does not always happen on the same map types. Seemingly random.

  1. Logs + screenshots or a video (Including a description of the issue, where to and how to reproduce it)

Attached is one screenshot I was able to take. The map in that screenshot is fine some PVP missions, and drops FPS other pvp missions. I can not yet see a correlation.

  1. If possible, the time when it happend. In this case we will be able to look more closely to the server logs. Also mention your time zone.

Game ended 23.10.2015 15:28:05

  1. Information on the configuration of your computer (DxDiag)

Attached is my dxdiag.txt.

I have tried both the latest production and beta video card drivers for AMD R9 290.

[DxDiag.txt](< base_url >/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=10055)

Is your graphic gard the r9 290? (I have an r9 280x and get 160+ fps in this map)

It would be very usefull to have full information about your PC specs. As you may know, games require different PC parts to be properly processed and rendered to be displayed at your screen, wich is why you often need a “balanced” PC, to avoid bottlenecking. I believe those maps you call have too many polygons wich gives your processor a hard time, therefore reducing settings that your GPU handles will make no difference, GPU wont process polygons even if its doing all single handed and drinking XD. More players (ships) in a game will also require a faster processor (and GPU to render shaders, AA, anisotrophic filtering, etc). It seems to me that your processor aint as good as your GPU.

I didn’t list my specs besides the dxdiag.txt output, how do you know my cpu ain’t as good as my gpu?

My specs:

Proc: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor (4 CPUs) ~3.5Ghz

Ram: 16GB G.Skill DDR3

SSD: 256GB Samsung 840 EVO

Video Card: AMD Radeon R9 290

OS: Win8.1

Recommended specs from the devs:

  • OS: Windows 7/8
  • Processor: 2.3 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo / AMD
  • Memory: 2 GB
  • Video Card: 1024 MB, NVidia GeForce 650 / AMD Radeon HD 5750
  • Hard Drive: 5 GB

Any input at all? I used to get solid ~62fps, and now it’s 39-42fps most games.

Star Conflict in ‘cinematic experience’ mode really sucks.

FPS drop can be caused by many factors, however i find really strange that you get that performance with that kind of pc (much better than mine, still i get similar performance in abandoned complex with most settings at minimum with decent screen resolution). Check if you have too many unnecesary ongoing processes/programs (specially if they werent running back when you had better performance), try using CCleaner or a similar program to clean registry and erase trash files, check ingame graphic settings and find out what part of your pc deals with each setting, make sure V-sync is off (only activate it if you have good framerate (60+) and if you see screen tearing), check for GPU software config (catalyst for radeon). If problems persist you could try uninstalling-reinstalling SC again. Theres a posibility that a recently downloaded graphic driver messed up your performance, so you can look into it too. Scan your pc for virus. Look into any change you made near to the moment you started getting lower fps in SC. Beware than recording takes a lot of processing power.

Side note: windows 8 is way worse than W7 or W10 for gaming…i suggest moving into W7 or 10. Also, i dont know if windows 8 has cores parked, look into it (if your cores are parked, better unpark them for better performance). Perhaps changing energy management will solve issues.

Also connection issues can affect fps.

Btw can you post a game log when this happens? I want to check something since I too have an amd gpu and get a lot of this issues in my logs:

 WARNING| frame 81 gameGlobals.frameTimeReal is too large (0.226664)
WARNING| ^1UiResourceManager::UnloadResourceInternal - somebody holds the ui resource (name: "soc_fb_ico", type: "TEXTURE")

Maybe some issue whit amd latest drivers (it was not so frequent before)? Can also someone with an Nvidia check if this is happening with the same rate? (it happens a lot to me)

We can’t repeat FPS down. But we try to repeat again, later.

Thanks all, I’ll do my best to log what I can.

How do I capture such logs?

I am pretty good about keeping win8.1 clean of junk. I’ve shut off background programs in an attempt to test their interference with no success. I never had issues running the game before with the various programs I had running.

I’ve tried the game with vsync on and off, doesn’t seem to make any difference.

I will consider reinstalling SC.

I’ve been scanning my head (any my update logs) for any changes made to the computer. I might try uninstalling one windows update at a time and checking performance.

The issues did not begin during a time shortly after a video card drive update, so I don’t believe that is to blame. I have tried upgrading to the latest beta drivers with no success. Back to the latest production drivers from AMD.

Regarding windows7/10 vs win8.1 - I don’t believe this is part of the issue, because I’ve been playing this game for 2 months now and the problems recently began.

I’m also looking to replace the stock heatsink/cooler combo with a all-in-one water cooled solution, as I heard the AMD R9 290 is plagued with heat issues. I did clean the card (and the rest of the computer) last night of dust, but it doesnt appear to have done much: (taken about 25 minutes ago)

I’m still testing this, but it appears as if unlocking the cores worked. I didn’t know Windows had that functionality. I’ll report back after a couple more games.

-About windows thing: its probably not the issue, but extra fps are always welcome  (if you are thinking on changing to W10, you will have to disable many privacy config. I have both W7 and 10 in the same PC (partitions), and i get similar fps on both…however recently i started playing crysis 2 in W10 with same settings and game runs way worse than in W7 T_T. Seems W10 handles better with new pcs, and we will have to wait for DX12).

-About the heatsink/cooler, you can try a pc diagnose program like Altavista or Everest and check CPU temperature.

Glad to hear it

However, I have yet to notice any FPS drop issues after I’ve unlocked my cores. The warning messages persist into my latest log file, so I don’t believe they are related.

Yep pretty much the same thing here. Can someone with a nVidia gpu check if those log entry above are common in the log files?

Good news that unparking cores worked, you can do that also from bios disabling c6 state once and for all. It prevents every os to handle the cpu energy savings function.

On " old cpu" can help handle fps drops and stuttering.

I think im having the same bug, but i have it on all stages, AND this happens when windows changes his background

Windows 7 has themes with multiple backgrounds that are changing every 10 mins.

Now im with ATI radeon m 5000 series in a laptop, and my normal fps are 60-40fps but when windows changes his background drops to 10-20 for the rest of the game…(i have full screen config, not windowed).

Doing alt+tab solves the problem when i return to the game, but can take 15 or more secs.

Seems more of a windows issue than a SC one. Turn off that desktop background switching (simply select one screenshot/wallpaper and deselect all the rest). See how that works…if performance issues still persist, write back in this post.
