[P] Connection lost: Reason: The client is unable to connect

Hi there, first up thanks for fixing the OSX 10.6.x bugs so now the game launches!  : )

I can’t seem to get past the matchfinder though, it comes up with the message in the subject and then leaves the ship locked until the match ends. 

 

I looked at the network port settings on the firewall - nothing is blocked outgoing, does there need to be port forwarding set up for incoming ports at all? There’s no indication on the forum post whether these are outgoing or incoming. 

 

I checked my net connection and there’s nothing up with it (30Mbit down, 2Mbit up).

I’ve disabled all firewalls and forwarded all the ports just in case and there’s no difference to the problem. 

Speedtest and Pingtest check out fine, no packetloss or bandwidth problems (30Mbit down, 2Mbit Up).

 

As there’s no connection tester for Mac I have done a bit of my own research. The client is behind a normal home router. 

 

Ping times to the game server from the log below is nice and stable, no packet loss so I don’t know what the packet loss warning in the logfile is referring to.

Right, so I fixed the other bug I was having with the game not showing on the laptop screen and can now test out the client on a different network.

I took it to a net cafe and hey presto problem goes away… so looks like there is something up with either my ISP or my home network. I will keep investigating… but can anyone please tell me i the ports mentioned on the ‘Required ports’ pages are outgoing, incoming or both? 

The plot thickens: I have narrowed the problem down to the choice between wired and wireless ethernet. No firewall interaction here. So:

  • if the internet is hooked up via wired ethernet, I get this packet loss - timeout problem.
  • if the internet is hooked up via a wireless adapter, problem goes away.

I have verified this is not something to do with one particular router by trying it out on various different routers in the house, same results each time. 

So, the problem is either a bug in the game, or a fault in my wired ethernet card or driver that is affecting Star Conflict in this manner.

  

Being as I’ve never seen this before playing Star Conflict - are there any Mac OS people out there that can confirm this behaviour?

Or better yet, any devs out there? at all? *tumbleweeds*  

I have the same problem on Mac, but.

My work WIFI network connects 100% times, while my home WIFI network connects only 10% time with the same error (i havent tried wired connection, since i dont own thunderbolt -> ethernet adapter :)wt ) .

 

My home router is ASUS RT-N16 (pretty powerfull one) with 40 Mb/s connection (my bittorrent client goes up to 8Mb/s over Wifi for download) and i have never experienced any connection issues at home network with other online games, so im pretty stuck with identifying the source…

 

Have you came up with any solution on this issue?

I have the same issues on windows. I never had any problems with online games, but when i try and find a battle i get the same message. I’m on a wired connection through a router. I tried port forwarding some ports that i found on the forum ( 80,443,27022,8090,6881,27032-27042,5222,3478-3480,7800-7802 ) but nothing changed. I will try and bypass the router and connect directly, if that work it means there are other ports not on the list that might be needed to be forwarded. I was really looking forward to playing the game but could only complete the tutorial :(.

Bypassing the router worked. It must be some port forwarding issues… Maybe i’ll find a more comprehensive post with all the ports that the game uses .

These are _outgoing only _so there’s no port forwarding required. I’ve yet to come up with how to get around this particular issue. 

Found them after i posted that … and forwarded the correct ports but didn’t help… I find it very weird that if i stick my internet cable in my pc it works but if I go through the rooter it doesn’t :(.

Is the bug reproduceable, if yes please describe how to reproduce the bug: - It isn’t 100% reproduceable as from time to time i can connect to a game, but the success rate is like 15 % at most. But most of the time i get a error when i try and launch a pve/pvp.

​ Additional information: When i play connecting to the internet directly from my computer and not through the rooter i dont have any connection problems, only when i use the rooter i get the connection error thing.

Game was instaled using steam, but has the same problem if i dont start it through steam.

In the game logs i was able after 2-3 tries to reconnect to the game but got stuck on loading and after a time i was sent back to login screen with an error, after reloging i was stuck in the same error again.

for all other ppl please attach the game.log and the game.net.log as “.txt” otherwise we cant help you.

I port forwarded those ports (TCP 80, 443, 3800-3815 UDP 35000-36000) but i dont know how to check if they are open 100%. I’ll try and do some more testing when my rooter isn’t busy. I really hope I can fix this cause i would really like to play … 

Edit: Tried making my computer DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) and still no change … weirder and weirder…

NotSure3: this isn’t a port forwarding issue, there’s no port forwarding requirements for this game. Port forwarding allows hosts from the grubby unwashed internet to connect in through your home router to your desktop machine.

 

What it needs is outgoing connectivity - so, your router is blocking outgoing connections from your PC to the internet. 

This guy here highlights your problem:

So, StarConflict not able to phone home to the game servers due to firewall restrictions on the router.

This is why when you connect your desktop directly to the internet it works - your router is taken out of the picture and StarConflict can connect out OK. 

 

Putting your desktop in the DMZ would likely only make it worse, these are usually configured as untrusted sections of your network with more restrictions.

 

You need to find whatever section of your router’s firewall config is blocking outgoing connections - something like a content filter or the like. Easiest way to do this would be to disable all firewalls on the router and see if that fixes it, then put the settings back one at a time until you find which one was causing the issue.    

Trying enabling QoS in your router if it’s not on.
