OS multiplayer events

Hi

I guess most of you already realized that OS lack something crucial : MMO content. Everything we do in OS is designed for solo play, and it’s what makes it so boring.

So here’s the deal : Let’s add missions that multiple players can do at the same time !

But I’m pretty sure that this was already suggested before, so instead of a tiny request, I though about how it should work if implemented. So I’m going to explain here MY vision of it.

Let’s start with the basic : What is it ?

A mission, like all missions already available is Open Space, but with one difference : You aren’t alone doing it.Other players can try to do it too, and if they finish before you, try again later because you lost.

Okey, so I explained it in a single line. Now let’s talk about rules, different modes, how squads should work, and stuff.

How can I join a MMO mission ?

Open the galaxy map, and look for the specific icon corresponding to MMO mission. Hover it, and it will say when the mission start and what is required (ship rank for example) and what is the reward.

Now, go the specified map. Once there, you should see in the mission list a “MMO mission”, with a timer representing the countdown before the mission start. Click on it to show the details (The number of players participating),  click on the button “Join” and you’re good to go. Now wait for the timer to reach 0, and you can play.

But be careful, missions have a ship rank limit (to make things fair).

How do work missions ?

Players are divided into teams randomly (and when possible, squads stay together) with equals number of players. Depending on the mission, there are either 2 opposing team, or no team at all (meaning all players are against each other).

All teams are given a common objective, depending on the mission. This objective is secret until the mission start, to make things fair (So players won’t choose the perfect build for the mission before it starts).

To win the mission, you have to complete the objective before ANY other team.

Missions have a duration, meaning that if nobody finished it before the timer end, nobody win.

During the mission, you can kill your opponents.

Here are some basic rules :

  • You can damage other ships, and won’t be considered as “Agressor” or “Criminal” if you do.

  • You can’t damage your allies.

  • Players that don’t participate to the mission can’t damage players that do. And it works the other way too.

  • If the objective is to collect a specific item or kill the specific ship, only players who participate to the mission can do it.

  • If you are in a squad and they have some buff (engi or command for example), but don’t participate or aren’t in your team, then you don’t get the buff.

  • You share your sensors with your team.

  • If you die, you enter spectator mode and have two options : Repawn (duplicator), or go to hangar. BUT, both options stop the mission here for you. You’ll still get the reward if your team win, but won’t be able to participate anymore.

  • Players that participate have a their pseudo of a specific color to show that they do (The color can vary depending on the team).

  • Players that participate also have their progress on the mission displayed above their name (So you can kill them if they are too close to finish).

  • Objectives are visible from anywhere on the map. But players are visible only if your team see them with their sensors.

Cool. But then, what missions can be available ?

A lot of missions actually. I won’t list all the possibilities, but here are some examples :

  • Death match (Team and No team). objective is to be the last man standing.

  • Kill XX time YYY ship (Team and No Team). Objective is to kill a specified target a many times.

  • Collect XX time YYY item (Team and No Team). Same as before, but this time it’s about collecting stuff.

  • Capture the beacon (Team only). You have to capture the beacon and hold it for enough time.

  • Capture the flag (Team only). 2 area, one for each team, are visible in the map. Your goal ? To steal a flag in their area and take it to yours before they do.

  • Bomball (Team only). Same as above, but this time it’s a bomb that spawn in the center of the map. And you have plant it in their area.

And what do I win ?

I don’t know. Ask devs. Monocrystal, beryllium, neodium ?

Anyway, I think that’s enough for this topic.

What do you guys think of it ?

EDIT : I forgot something important. Missions may start only if a minimum of players joined. If only one or no players join it, the mission is cancelled.

It’s an interesting idea.

But there are a few problems coming with this:

A) The Q.Q from non-OS players: If you make the reward to good, they will Q.Q
B) If it isn’t nice, you won’t have players for this.
C) The time is a problem. If you make it to short you hardly can achieve something.
D) In which sectors this should happen?
The rank could alone remove participants(newbies), the sector itself could have some threats to participants(Solaris Wasteland xD).
E) Your no-damage feature would need a system implemention as this isn’t currently possible.

A)  Well, OS seriously need something to make it worth. It is interesting in NOTHING. And devs can balance it I guess?

B) Once again, it’s up to devs. But admit that it sounds so cool  ![:007_2:](<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/007_2.png “:007_2:”)

C-D) I was thinking of making 1 mission per faction per hour, available randomly on the faction’s sector. Maybe more if it is popular. So no problem for the “start” time. And for the duration, PvP/PvE missions have a time limit too, so no problem I guess.

E)  Yeah of course. But it’s not a problem at all. This is easy to do. What’s harder is to make different missions and stuff.

Anyway it is necessary or else players will cheat by asking friends outside of the mission to help them.

I would make the single life feature for some of those missions, not all; sometimes dying for the objective is nice and ofc you want to keep playing…makes it more dynamic. Ofc a single life has another interesting gamestyle: you are more careful, tactics take more importance, taking out enemy ships and surviving is crucial to win, etc. So both options should be available imo. A special ship providing respawn should cover this (so you dont waste dups).

But, it is made on purpose, to differentiate it from PvP and make players kill each other to stop them from completing the mission.

Without the single life, players will be more likely to focus only on the objective because killing someone cost time.

To D: It should be (a) fixed sector(s).
It should be a green question mark or something on the sector stating if the mission is running or when it will be active again.

Global events on SC could be nice, and that’s what we’re working on. There’ll be a new forum contest about it soon ![;)](<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/002.png “;)”)

Nice, I’ll need to dig up all my old ideas then!
