To what degree are your ships customizable? I know the weapon loadouts are customizable somewhat; what, if any, are the limitations or restrictions (i.e. weight, energy, heat)? Can you purchase alternate skins or make any other visual changes to personalize your craft?
How are new ships acquired? Do you pick a faction at game start and then get locked into only that faction’s designs? Can you purchase ships from multiple factions?
How strongly are you “encouraged” to spend real money to unlock content? Can I expect to farm for weeks on end in order to afford new ships without spending cash?
How many “maps” are there currently? From what I’ve been able to gather from gameplay videos, it appears there are only 3-4 unique instanced combat zones, and most of them look to be minor variations on the same “asteroid field over planet” theme.
Is PvP combat the only way to earn currency and advance?
How in-depth is combat? From the gameplay videos I’ve seen, it looks to just be a matter of whoever has better weapons and more armor wins, with very little in the way of skill being a factor. Is there more to it than what is immediately apparent? It doesn’t seem like dodging or taking cover is possible in a space shooter, so are there any other options in combat aside from soaking up hits with your shields and hoping you kill your opponent before they kill you?
How does the game run? I’ve got an AMD Phenom II X4 @ 3.6GHz, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti and 8GB of RAM. Should I be able to expect to run Star Conflict smoothly at max settings?
1: stuff you install need to be same tier as your ship. There is no permanent energy drain, however activating modules/afterburner will drain energy. Some modules have a e-drain/second
2: just buy them. you can changefactions whenever you like in contracts.
3: well, it is of course easier and faster to level up/gain money with a premium license still, it´s possible to have lots of fun without it as well. Just don´t expect to have a new ship every two hours without it, there is some (very decent, tbh) grinding involved. Also new items are available 1 week for real money exclusively, after that week, everyone can get them. Nothing serious actually.
4: 2 scenario maps and erm… no idea how many PvP maps. I´d say about 6-8? But they add more, just today the new patch added another one, last patch did as well add maps.
5: nope, you can also just do PvE if you like, although i would say, if you don´t like PvP at all, this game will not be for you
6: actually you can very well dodge attacks, rockets, snipers, … Also there are many ways to take cover since on every map there floats stuff around or asteroids. However, one or two good players mostly won´t make up for it, if the rest of the team isn´t good. You have the best experience when playing together in a squad so you can build strategies like 1 disables, 1 buffs, 1 is mainly for damage and so on.
7: well, the game runs extremly well i must say. Nothing makes you realise it´s beta - at least not on the performance side. You should be perfectly capable of running the game maxed out.
I expected a biased response but agree with the above comments, also the customization to ships involves items, enough so it’d be rare to run into an identical opponent, IE larger ships have say 7 or so slot types each with 10 item options, not to the point of diabloesque items but enough for personalization.
So far the biggest issue I ran into was being teamkilled intentionally (as shown a few posts down) and the community is also extremely small so the guy who tked me was actually in 4 of my games in a row. It was enough alone for me to drop the game until they add some sort of measure to prevent it. Other than that the game itself is pretty fun.
