Oculus Rift DK2

The Oculus team will start shipping the new Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 now in july.

Will there be an update to Star Conflict to support it?

I do hope so!

Today I only play Star Conflict with Oculus Rift DK1 and I looking forward to play it with the DevKit 2 when it arrives…

i can’t answer your question, just have another one for you:

care to write about how it is (in another thread maybe?)?

i mean your experience?

I would like to hear about the rift with this game also. I wanted to buy the to play this game. No time to make any games, just wanted to play this game with that headset.

Well, first things first - who am I?

I love playing Battlefield 4 with keyboard+mouse. It’s easy to understand, kill all enemies and capture the flag, and the matches are short.

In Star Conflict you have the same game type - but in space and it is working great (with or without Oculus Rift)!

I am so old that PONG was actually the first videogame I played… and after that I have kept playing nearly every game for every hardware.

When the first hype for VR (VirtualReality) came for about 25 years ago I was so close to buy a unit for very much money… but honestly - it was crap.

But for me, I understood that VR was the future. So I waited and waited… and then (after many years) did Palmer Luckey something great - the Oculus Rift.

I bought the unit and start testing it with every demo and game I found - and it was really wonderful!

Now, why do I tell you all this?

All my friends and family have tried the Oculus Rift and they all liked it a lot! But none(!) have asked to try it again…

Why? I think there are more than one answer to this but the main two reasons are:

  • The resolution is very low - you can see the pixels clearly!

  • Everyone got more or less motionsickness!

Back to me then…

I also got some motionsickness in the beginning, but I kept playing for longer and longer sessions - and today I have no problem at all!

But the low resolution is still a problem… for the first minutes. After a while I forget about it and I only see the wonderful 3D world that is around me.

Now I hope you all understand that the first Oculus Rift (DK1) is not for all. I do hope that the second one DK2 is way much better (they say it will be). And when they release the commercial one I belive that it will change, not only the way we play games, but also many other things that we today can’t even think of…

Star Conflict

So, my experience in Star Conflict is in one word - awesome! First time I started the tutorial I was BLOWN AWAY!

  • I can’t in words explain how incredible fantastic the game is when using Oculus Rift. But remember, I have no problem with motionsickness.

When you are in a dogfight and the enemy fly by you, I’ll guess you have some problem to follow him when using a monitor. In Oculus Rift you just turn your head and follow him and then turn your ship after him without loosing him from sight! That’s really neat…

And the world in Star Conflict is great and made in “3D”… It looks fantastic when you look at it on your monitor… Yes? …but when you use the Oculus Rift… fantastic goes to fantastic X 10! It’s hard to explain but you are truly in that world!

You know when you play you see the world from behind your ship. In Oculus Rift you “hang” just above your ship. You can look up, to the sides and when you look down you see the ship and the 3D-deep is awesome. Your ship is so close and far away you see the asteroids and even farther away you see a planet. Words can never explain that feeleing - you have to try it to understand it!

As I said earlier I have tried nearly every demo and game out there that works with the Oculus Rift.

The Star Conflict developers have made a great work to support Oculus Rift - best of them all! A big thanks from me!

So, if I rate Star Conflict a 5 of 5 when playing it with a normal monitor I need to raise that to a 10 of 5 if I play with Oculus Rift.

It’s still the same game - but with Oculus Rift you ARE IN THE GAME!

Sounds great.

Once my Dk2 arrives i will be back playing SC for sure!

Could you make a review for the game on Steam? You are very convincing

I so want to try Oculus Rift in Invasion mode, seeing all those structures in 3D…

Good one! The more positive reviews, the more players and less waiting time in the PvP game!

A loooong one is on Steam now…

Yeah! I’ll guess that the developers read all posts at this forum, cause I complain in a post about that the version 0.11.4 destroyed some of the Oculus Rift (OR) 3D depth…

…and in 0.11.5 they fixed it again! (still not perfect - but good enough)

Invasion

Before, I tried to explain the feeling playing PvP-matches with a OR - this time I try to give you a picture how it is in Invasion-mode:

  • So much slower - but in good way!

When I press the Undock-button I know that I don’t have to wait “estimated 1 minute” and is out in space in no time (with or without OR).

In Invasion-mode, my jaw always drop. Always! Here you can truly see how enormous the station is, where your ships is docked in.

My head and eyes moves in all direction to really understand how fantastic and big this world* really is (*read: only one(!) sector) .

Comparing it to a PvP match: Match starts and off you go - time is important so in a way you don’t have time to sit back and admire it all…

…but in Invasion mode… I love the “Station protective active”, cause I know that I can be safe from you young players out there, with fast reflexes and I-am-best-confidence, so I can just fly around and enjoying the flight. Yes, with a OR it is great just to fly! How can I explain the feeling to fly very close to an enormous structure, see that your ship is just a couple of meters from the surface and when you fly so close you can actually feel that the Covert Ops ship is actually going close to 400m/s - it is so nice that I have to lick up some saliva…

So, after a couple of PvP-matches I always take “a ride” in Invasion-mode - just because it is so relaxing!

And I do this with the very first OR: DevKit 1, and still I got this sense of actually be in that wonderful world of Star Conflict!

I really have to agree with wwwholmiz, its almost uncomparable between normal screen and oculus. the vastness of the environment and ability to look around is second to none…

but… today I received my DK2 and alas… SC does not work on it for now… It doesn’t seem to detect there is an oculus rift and doesn’t let me select it. This is probably because the application is written for sdk 3 and not sdk 4.

I really really really hope they will upgrade soon as I cannot wait to see SC in full HD on this one.

Hope it will be implemented in the next update then.

I still haven’t got my DK2, but that day it arrives… I really want it to work with SC!

(if not I’ll guess I have to play some not-finished-Beta-games as Elite! Do you hear that developers? Elite! Is that what you want us to play?)

Keep fingers crossed - all the time…

Good news,

with the new 0.4.1 sdk of oculus you can disable the oculus service. This makes it possible to have some backwards compatibility and it works now with DK2!..

Basic headtracking though, no positional tracking, but HD is working

the game decided to support Oculus Rift so they will adapt to the new update.

DK2 will have the compability mode, so even if we are delayed with this you can use DK2 already!

We try to be on time, but be aware we are still a beta and working on multiple things atm

Indeed good news!

“Basic headtracking though, no positional tracking, but HD is working :)”

  • better than nothing! Hope that the lower FieldOfView, compare to DK1, is not disturbing.

And I still haven’t got my DK2… but DK1 works ok for me…

If anyone wondering about the differences between Oculus Rift DevKit 1 (DK1) and DevKit2 (DK2) here is a great page for you:

http://www.idesignvegas.com/oculus-dk2-first-impression-lens-view/

Finally, my DK2 has arrived and I have now tested it on SC and it works great… after some tweaking.

So until we got an update for the DK2 here is what I did to make it work for me (not sure it works for others):

  1. Disable the oculus service

  2. Set the refresh rate to 75Hz on your monitor!

If you have, lets say, 60Hz on your monitor you will have some stuttering in the DK2 so 75Hz it’s important (DK2 uses 75Hz).

DK1 vs DK2

So, how much better is the DK2 (even without the head-positional-tracking)?

Motion blur: The new screen in DK2 is really good! The motion blur is (close to) no more!

Resolution: Way better! I can now see things far, far away. Before I just saw some colored pixels… “Is it a spaceship or an asteroid? Ahhh… it was a fuelcell”

Hope that the final Oculus Rift will have 4K, cause I can still see pixels clearly!!!

Colors: With the DK1 it was like all colors was greyed; greyred, greyblue, greywhite and greyblack.

The colors in DK2 are deep clear and the contrast is fantastic. For the first minutes I just flew around with a big dumb smile… The space was so colorful!!!
