What is the difference with the weapons? I know that plasma depletes shields but what the benefit of the other 2 weapons?

What’s the difference between a laser, a plasma canon and a railgun ?
Those are the three main weapon groups.
Lasers deal thermal damage (or EM with a microwave lens), Plasma deal EM damage (or kinetic with a needle module), Railgun deal kinetic damage (Thermal with antimatter shells).
In general, kinetic damage are most effective against hull, and EM damage are most effective against shield. But this can be tweaked by changing the ship’s resistance with passive modules, so don’t trust it as an immutable truth.
Why does it seem that lasers are much less effective at damage as a whole than the others ?
Lasers have the smallest projectile size, in fact they are a tiny beam. Hitting shields with them is as easy as with other weapons but if it comes to hull they are quite ineffective. You need to hit the ship itself and not a sphere around it. Shields are about 2 times as big as the ship itself.
In addition you need to stick on the target for 100% of the time to do 100% of damage. 0.5seconds off the target will cut down your damage per second by 50%. -> Less time on target deals less damage. Only Pulse and Long Range Lasers will deal most of the damage instant by the pulse.
