Like the title says…what exactly are sectors in PVP/PVE queue, what relevance have these and if more and more are discovered, help us to what? Or it is just a thing to look fancy, nothing more? I didnt find a usefull relevance for that info.
If I’m not wrong, It’s corresponding to the amount of battle in progress.
I always assumed it’s the number of battles currently going on.

Because they were trying to be cute and tie into the back story instead of just being your run of the mill shooter.

This is not a bug but a Game Design Choice made by the Devs.
Noone says is a bug…just to be done a proper description of that feature…probably a forum moderator moved this topic from Game discussion/Miscellanous here on Bug Report Section/Texts.
