NASA found water on Mars (Discussion)

Problem with space elevator is that they’re unstable and all it takes to destroy it is a missile to the base, gravity sucks.

Hey any “The Elevator” comes with a Gundam, so i am not to worried about that

Making money is not the “direct” goal for such things. Not all the people think “that way”.

It’s about the tech innovation that such achievements can grant.

Think about all the things we have now tnx to the efforts to go on the moon for the first time. Back then the real reason was pretty much political, still the benefits over years affected all of us.

The moon is basically a rock sitting in his orbit, we have studied it enough to know that ther’s no " magic space fuel" there, also sending in orbit all the equipments needed to establish a colony there will be really not only expensive but also not whort at all. There’s nothing on the moon, we should send there not only heavy machinery to build things but also materials (alloy, steel, copper, water etc). Have you an idea how much it cost to send a single kg in “space”? Think about the Iss… Building that lab in orbit costed billons of dollars, the maintenence also is not so cheap. And the Iss actually is smaller than my home. Think what wuold mean to send tons and tons of stuffs to build a single colony on the moon. Building heavy industry to actually plan a space program that wuold start from moon is not even scifi: it’s a no sense.

Instead landing on mars will mean: new efforts to discover how to recicle water and wastes ina more efficient way, new propulsion metods, studies on materials able to prevent long exposure to radiation (another little problem about space…), medical training for extreme conditions. Etc. Etc.

An huge step forward in tons of scientific studies that we need desperately. Here is a link to the famous letter from Ernst Stuhlinger that explain himself way bettet than me on why space programs are so important. Read it, you will discover that it’s not about money at all. Once again: not all the people in the world share the same materialistic view of life like (i always hope it is ) a small part of US citizens.

Making a MoonBase as a logistic out-post for heavy industry actually make a lot of sense, since no matter how you put it, it has to be out there, even space Elevator won’t be able to support material requirements for long term space programs. So manufacturing, at-least the heavy industry must be up there (meaning anywhere but not down-here) and for resources, there is seamlessly endless supply of those already out there - asteroid belt, there are already multiple corporation looking and developing ways to start mining it, like NASA plans to capture and haul an asteroid back on Earth/Moon orbit.

How to make that plan about extraction of resources from asteroid belt economic sustainible it’s really debatable.

Guys seriously take a look at how expensive was only the whole Iss program. And we are talking about a small lab in orbit with earth. You are talking about heavy industry… Let’s be realistic: with the actual tech that we use to send things in orbit it’s impossibru.

Yes, not only Nasa is working at reusable space vehicles and that will lower the cost per kg of space launches… From the actual 10000/40000 (with human on boards the price can double) dollars to the half. Really? I mean: Really? :stuck_out_tongue:

And c’mon space elevators are just scifi actually.

Instead, now, a single mission to mars is yes dangerous, but still way more realistic than your plans to colonize the moon and build stuffs there.

Stuffs made by resources taken by earth or another source like asteroid belt (that is not really around the corner), with machinery launched by the ground and humans that need food, water and oxigen (also some sex sometimes and vodka oc) that are not really easy to find in open space or on the moon.

Btw who talked about long space programs? We don’t have to colonize mars, just land there takr some selfies, study for a wike how to write your name with pee on the red sand and come back. Colonization? That’ something that maybe our grandchildren’sons will deal with.

Every single peace of technology has been “just a SiFi” at some point.

If humanity doesn’t destroy itself or crap Earth orbit so hard that it won’t be able to launch anything (which is really closing on us rapidly), it will leave earth, and not just with a probe to the Mars.

Well yes, in a far future (or tomorrow) maybe we will solve the warp theory problem about the gazilion energy that it needs, among with some other LITTLE maths problems that theory have. Who knows, i hope that this will happen. Meanwhile we can do this, we can actually TRY to go to mars without spending an insane ammounts of money and resources.

One step at a time: we landed on the moon only 46 years ago after all. Which in human timings it’s nothing.

NASA is to lazy and won’t do anything, the Russians are already making plans to send a ship and humans to Mars. You hear that NASA? Even Asia is considering it!

NASA command: scramble a funding team now we can’t let the Russians win! And get those spy planes over there this instant!

Go tell our president to fund us more and we’ll do that.

That’s easy, tell him the Russians are going to set up strategic base on Mars ;p

The only thing we will find on Mars is a giant ancien god with the form of a Dragon called a C’than that the Emperor of Mankind bring on Mars.

And every humans landing a feet on the Red Planet will start to replace body parts by metal stuff.

AND WE WILL HAVE THE MECHANICUM OF MARS !

Notice how all this Mars stuff comes out with the blood moon.

Awww C’ mon it must be a joke. I mean i’ve read things from people that don’t believe we went on the moon, but this… This must be a joke or i don’t want to live on this planet anymore.

Considering how this type of material exists on Tumblr as dead-f-cking-serious thoughts, I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t, Sponge.

I wonder if this is just an American thing… Do you Europeans have this type of sh-t happen?

Sadly when internet became a “thing” all those bs spreaded worldwide.

But according to tv shows i saw on discovery channel (which 90% of production is rubbish): you are doomed, we still have an hope! :stuck_out_tongue: (maybe)

You guys have Oil near by, don’t worry, we’ll be there for it you

Tnx but speaking about Italy since ww2 we already are a colony somehow.

Btw in my country one of the major political party (they took around 30% of the seats) is seriously oriented toward those conspiracy theorist to the level that in the parliament we have people that believe in chemtrails, alien abductions and alternative cancer cure…

On top of that they also are populists like not even nazis were. It’s a mess.

Exactly!

That is obviously a troll. At least I hope so, because anyone that would actually write that needs to be put in a loony bin.
