I was just in Federation trying to complete the daily mission ‘Lucifer’ in which you are required to escort a water tanker across Ice Pits to the Cobalt Mines gate. Another random player and myself had just about finished the mission when two squad corp players started to attack the transport.
Initially I didn’t panic, as both of these trolls were under station protection, and therefore should not have been able to inflict damage on the transport. However, when I placed my crosshairs over the transport, it was clearly being damaged.
Both the random player and myself opened fire on the trolls, only to be greeted with the text, “target is under station protection”. Our efforts were useless and in a matter of minutes, the mission transport had been destroyed, forcing us to go all the way back across Ice Pits and escort the blasted thing all over again.
I don’t know how, but these two players were able to shoot and inflict damage on a friendly NPC mission ship while under station protection. The two pilots immediately used the warp gate to Cobalt Mines, proving that there was no criminal or aggressor penalty on them from their attack.
I don’t know where to find the log file…

If the Water tanker is a neutral unit, it can be attacked, even with station protection I think. You will lose karma but it is not a criminal offence since you are not attacking other players.
So yes, they were trolling.
Idea:
Those trolls shoot on the transporter.
Station protection deactivated.
You kill them. Or i kill them :P.
Done.

Then why do the escorts aggro? At this point in the mission, the escorts were all dead. Was that part of the problem, perhaps?

Most likely the escorts had attacked if they were alive. But they weren’t 
I personally think that the aggressor flag should be given for attacking friendly transports, but not so much for the NPC’s (I enjoy killing empire engineers… don’t stop me now)
The hilarious part of this comes in when you realize that you can:
Do damage to neutral units while under station protection
Collide with other units without being marked aggressor
Collide without taking damage while under station protection
Which all together mean that if you’re really bored, you can try to kill an escort by ramming them repeatedly.
Right. Well that means I’m about to go make a suggestion, because that is just stupid.
