UPDATE: Since this thread is getting unexpected attention, I’ll give a brief update now that it has been several months.
Reaper: I don’t use this ship much anymore, as I have moved on to T4/5 matches. It’s more of a novelty now, but still fun to fly. Once I get a Rank 15 ship, I’ll probably attempt to retrofit the Reaper so it’s more agile and tanky.
Sai: I have since used this ship a lot more, and have found it to be the best bomb-planting ship I own. I have regularly taken it into T5 maches, and have planted at least 1 bomb during the match on a regular basis.
Title: I still use the Privateer title, as it is my favorite out of all the ones I have unlocked.
Price: I still think the pricetag is too steep for what you are given.
Stickers: These are the stickers you get with the Jolly Roger DLC
ORIGINAL REVIEW: Alright, so after a long and hard debate with myself, I finally caved and bought the Jolly Roger DLC for $49.99. I primarily bought the pack for the Reaper frigate, though the Gold Standards, stickers, and Sai interceptors were a nice bonus. So here are my thoughts for those of you thinking about buying one of these DLCs.
About 6 matches after buying the pack, I was hit with buyer’s remorse. It’s not that the Reaper doesn’t look cool, or that it can’t hold its own. But it really isn’t comparable to the Anaconda-M. I was hoping to transfer my loadout for my Anaconda-M to the Reaper. What I found was the Reaper needed its own unique loadout because the ship bonuses were different and it was missing a passive slot.
The Reaper quickly became my Crit boat, while my Anaconda-M remained my DPS tank.
The Sai is wicked fast and has a nice feel. I was able to plant a bomb with relative ease during a match of Detonation. Even though it is a Recon, I like the fact that it has a micro-warp engine. I used the Sai again during a match of Combat Recon, and survived reasonably well for a non-inty pilot.
The 10,000 GS is nice, since I can buy another premium ship if I so chose. I haven’t noticed a huge difference in my match rewards and I have no idea where to look to see if the “Captain’s Cut” bonus is active. It’s also hard to tell due to the 13 day license being active.
The 5 unique stickers are cool-ish. There’s a few variations on pirate flags including a fun Irish-themed one with a skull in a Derby on a clover.
The unique title received from purchasing this pack is “Desperado” “Privateer”. A little too cowboy-ish for my taste. I would have preferred the simple title of “Pirate” over this, but I still wear it. They updated the title as-per a request so it now falls in line with the other pirate-themed titles.
Overall, I’d give this DLC a rating of 3 out of 5 stars. The main detractor being pricing. For $50 I could have easily bought all the DLCs for Skyrim and not have been attacked by the buyer’s remorse I felt with this pack. I would have liked to see a pirate frigate pack, as I like the Phoenix too, but I am unwilling to pay $80 just for that ship.
