Lol, I learned some of the ins and outs of Free to Play games through playing world of warplanes. So things like tier rushing to tier V through premium are never a good idea. Lols, I probably won’t by the spark even though I do like gunships because of that though. At least right away. So I’ll keep my eye out for sales and look to pick up the galactic explorers pack.
In world of warplanes I never bought prem planes because they weren’t much better (from an economic standpoint) than regular planes. Here though, prems have no repair costs, generate free synergy (not convertable with standards synergy), and generate more credits. So, what are regular ships better at? It sounds like prems are good for tier III and if you want to try tier IV and V, do them with regular ships.

Except some T3 premiums that actually have an extra slot for something since they are top tier, all the other premiums have nothing extra than the standard ships. It’s just different configurations, usually a bit more specialised on their standard roles. For example the T5 gunship Spark is more of a damage dealer than a standard gunship because it has more offensive slots + bonus damage. On the other hand it has less of everything else, so it’s more of a glass cannon.
So to answer your questions, what do standard ships have? The answer is different configurations that you can use to your advantage. Are premiums better in a fight? Not really (except T3), they are just more straightforward in their roles. From an economic point of view, they are exactly “Pay to Grind Less”.

You may have just become my new favorite person of the day. One of the few new players I know that understands that tier-rushing is bad. Props to you good sir
Ha, I see tier rushers in wowp. They fly in straight lines and then try to turnfight in a heavy fighter. I almost feel bad shooting them down. I don’t want to be ‘that’ guy who doesn’t know what modules are at tier V :).
Thanks for the clarification on what the differences between prem and standard ships is.
So the ship bundles are on sale this weekend so I’m thinking I might pick up 15000 GS and pick the tier III bundle. I know it’s not quite as good a deal as a half price Galactic explorer pack, but I don’t want to wait for 3 months for them to put that on sale.

If I were you… I would get Emp + Fed T3 bundles + some premium

Ok! I think I’ll get that. At least the Fed one for today and see how I like them and what tier III is like. I need a few credits to bump my regular ships into tier II anyways.

>Spark
>glass cannon
If anyone manages to build a Spark as a glass cannon, then they clearly don’t know what hull slots are for.
So, just to follow up, I bought the Federation pack at tier III. The Eagle B is sooo fun, barreling in and out of fights at 550 mph!!! But I’m kinda clueless at tier III, especially with the other two ships from the pack, so I’m grinding up to tier II and trying out all the different guns and active modules.
Valor is a speed ambulance. Use its speed to go with your fast attack ships and cover them with your heals. Usually is flown with adaptive shields and non stop afterburning.
In case a pesky interceptor get in your tail, I recommend you learn to use free view to fire EM torpedoes. Top cov ops interceptors in t3 lack emergency barrier.
Paralax is a good tackler. I fly it with a speed build, zooming in and out with assault rails at 450 m/s, but you have plenty of possibilities with cruise engines, maneuverability builds with bubbles or ions. gravibeamers etc…
I waited until DLC was 50% off, then used the Gold Standards that came with it to buy some premium ships I wanted when ships were 50% off. I only bought premium stuff when I had played quite a bit and had reached rank15 etc. Even then there are some premium ships I haven’t ended up using much
Eagle B was the most natural to me coming from World of Warplanes cause you could use speed to escape situations and Boom and Zoom on enemy ships. It’s not a hard hitting ship, but it’s hard to catch. I kinda want to try and get all three max speed at the cost of maneuverability engines just to see how fast of a ship this thing can be :D, but that probably wouldn’t be the best setup. The valor and parallax seem interesting, but I’m going to have to get more familiar with those two classes before I can really make a judgement, but thanks for the advice!

You have a little misconception here.
The Eagle B is not a boom and zoom ship. The usual fighter names doesn’t fit here, but if I had to chose, I would say that the Eagle B is more of a turn and burn ship. Think of it like a Zero. Highly maneuverable but really squishy.
Thanks to the regeneration of health with the modules and the shield mechanics, a lot of ships here are either zoom & boom or turn & burn.
They are just staying power supreme.
That said, the Eagle B is a great ship for farming, but you need to play it to its advantages. And avoid EM torpedoes.
