Give me some general dogfighting tips

Hi, I’m getting into this game again there’s nothing more satisfying than having your railguns knock an enemy into outer orbit; but more often than not, it’s me thats getting shot up.

How do you guys manage to stay locked on and keep your mouses on the target? How do you fly your ships so well? I’d like to know

Any advice would be appreciated.

P.S. I typically fly Deimos (gunship). Neutron (ecm), Hydra (long range and Machete AE (command) All T2 ships

Regards

Every time you die reflect on what went wrong so that you are better prepared against it next time.

That’s how I learned.

  1. You need fast reaction speed

  2. You need high ship rotation speed

  3. You need to proximate their ship speed and trajectory so you can hit them with missile.

  4. Low ping is better, I find it’s almost impossible to land any hit using slow speed weapon on RU server (200+ ping). Try laser if you have high ping.

  5. Don’t fly alone, fly with a group. You have less chance to be targeted.

  6. Fly like your life is depend on it, get that adrenaline pumpin.

  7. Strategic death is okay, sacrifice yourself for the whole team is even more noble.

This advice is extremely well put and simple to the point.

Remember Takamina is actually a pilot all veterans, such as myself, look up to. His skill is unparalleled to ours.

  1. Know your ship modules and cooldowns. Time your engagements. Dont be so in a rush to kill everything when all your modules are on cool down.

  2. Use open 3D space to your advantage. Come from above, and below, and never horizontally to your enemy.

  3. Master your ships abilities. Know there pros and cons.

There are more kinds of dogfighting, reaction is the most important thing.

You should create your own way to kill someone and survive a attack by one, two or three players.

Learn using modules to the right time, know your modules effects.

You maybe can learn by some veteran players ingame, i’m sure there is someone who whould teach you.

Thanks for these tips. I will definitely bookmark this post

Another question: How often do you use your mousewheels? Do you zoom in or out when you are in close engagements?

if you start playing tier 3-5, make sure your ship has a higher energy regen than the cost to use the afterburners. then just fly around and hold the shift button constantly

I only using the mouse wheel to zoom out and look behind rocks where i can’t look with sensors, a important thing for me is the DPI button on my mouse.

Everybody has their own style of dogfighting, you need to understand your own strengths, weaknesses and maybe most importantly your preferences and develop your own style from that.

What all good fighters have in common is good situational awareness. There are more enemies than your immediate target on the battlefield. There are two minimap modes, the 2D map can be extremely useful to position yourself with respect to both the enemy and your team if the battle gets chaotic. Be patient, never panic, never get tunnel vision. Know who can disable you, watch their positioning and choose your own accordingly. Do not lose track of the mission objectives.

Learn to disengage in time, learn to press the issue where you can. Learn to bait and wait out problematic enemy modules, have patience using your own so you have them available when you really need them. Be conscious of the strengths and weaknesses of your own ship and fly and position yourself accordingly.

Use the battlefield to its fullest. There are three dimensions for you to fly in; being aligned to the horizontal plane just means that you’re aligned like everybody else and move in a direction the enemy expects you too. Predictable targets are easy targets, so be unpredictable. Experience will help you predict enemy movements.

I have no dogfighting skills. Here is what I can

give you:

Don’t die.

If you see multiple enemies think to yourself “Nope. Nope. NOPE. NOPE!!”

If you have good acceleration/decelerationbecause of ship modifiers and you are being chased, Shift+S. It will put you behind your opponent and you’ll be chasing him now. This doesn’t always works though.

I usually keep on weaving back and forth while they follow me and i use the keybind (tab) to shoot backwards while my ship is still going forward

N00b, usually you say what the keybind does not what you put as the keybind. Do you mean “looking back”? I use “x” for that.

Looking backwards does not affect your aim. What you need is “Free aim”. Useful not just for shooting backwards.

Free aim would be awesome if we had a toggle for it.

True. Although I have it on MOUSE4 so it’s only a minor inconvenience to thumb it while shooting.

Guys guys, The benefits of a keypad…I have it as a thumb modifier key. So I can activate it on a moments notice. Lol

Takamina is really an awesome player. Just amazing!

But, players are humans and humans make mistakes…

Nevertheless, he killed me in less than 3 seconds in open space after I attacked him.

Respect.

By free aim, you mean going in a straight direction but turning your camera behind?

Holding down the free aim button means you can turn your camera + guns in any direction, no limits. So you can fly in one direction but shoot in another (the firing angle limitations of your guns do apply, however).

Take special note that while homing missiles always get fired from the front of your ship, all unguided missiles and torpedoes leave your ship in the direction you are aiming at, no matter where that is. So you can fire missiles at a pursuer behind you, someone flying side by side, anywhere. It’s one of the reasons I always prefer unguided over guided missiles.

You can still fully maneuver your ship while free aiming but will need to use the keys configured for directional changes since your mouse is only used for aiming then.

This is something that should be called a bug though.
