Game crashing when joining battle or going into open space

First, I think it’s the same error as posted John161, but I did few more tests that could be helpful so I am posting it as separate bug report.

1.) Game is crashing in all game modes (PvP, PvE, Co-Op) after the list of players is displayed and before the counter displaying time before the ship spawns is displayed. Also is crashing when entering open space.

2.) I expect to see the time counter and entering the battle/open space

3.) Only crashing at start of the battle, when rejoining to batle after relog or when entering open space, no crash in hangar

4.) Game started crashing after game update at tuesday 1. 11. 2016

5.) Always since the update, tested both fullscreen and windowed

6.) I can make a video and post the last few seconds before crash if you need to see exact timing when the game is crashing or make screenshot from the last displayed frame in the video before the crash for all the 3 cases in the logs when you will need them.

Chronologically the logs are as follows - 1. when joining Co-Op battle (same for other modes), 2. joining the same battle (in progress) after relog, 3. entering open space. I zipped both exceptions and logs (there are no exception files generated).

7.) Times are listed in logs, timezone CET (Central Europe Timezone)

8.) Here is hwinfo1.zip , video driver is nVidia 340.98, graphic card GTX650 2GB, Linux-x86_64, OpenSUSE Leap 42.1, KDE (Plasma 5), CPU Intel i5 3.40MHz

I am starting StarConflict directly using the executable because when I use steam or steam link (steam steam://rungameid/212070), the game is crashing in the loading screen before the login screen appears and it started to do with some steam update about 1-2 months ago (if I remember well). I can do another bug report about it when needed. Anyway, I was always using steam account to log in (with the file steam_appid.txt containing the game id 212070 in the directory with the executable.

I even tried to reinstall steam (after i deleted all the steam directories in ~/.local/share and /.steam) and game reinstallation with no change, still crashing the same way. Same result with login over gaijin account (with linked steam account but without the steam_appid.txt file).

Game worked for about 2 months until the last game update that I did over steam at 1. 11. 2016. I didn’t do any update on my system after I did play for the last time and before the game update so there shouldn’t be any changed system library that could cause this.

Edit: Checked after today’s update via steam (8. 11. 2016) - still crashing in same situations

How many players were there in the battle?

you can see it in game.log, but it happens no matter how many players there are

there is a bug when server have crash at game 16 vs 16 players

will be fixed

I don’t think it’s this problem, i.e. PvE has always only 4 people and it’s crashing there too (every single try), same happens in open space (i think there was listed 5 or 6 players in the log). Could be some incompatible libraries with the build or something wrong in the game itself but hard to guess because there is no error message or exception except the line FATAL: NOT IMPLEMENTED in the game.log right after the player list when I join the battle and the timing between the list of the players and crash (which is also in the game.log). If there would be at least info about what isn’t implemented but there is nothing more. And it’s crashing on client side and only in Linux (I don’t have other OS but people from corporation with Windows don’t have this problem).

The yesterday’s (23.11.2016) update changed nothing in this problem but i got an idea and i got a little further.

I tried to run StarConflict in gdb and got this result in it after the game got the FATAL line in log and the game stopped working after i clicked the image for open space (i used the continue command in gdb):

I got connection error because it took some time between the crash and before i wrote the continue command in gdb so just ignore it. Anyway, I didn’t stop the research and i tried to use other tool - strace (which is probably ignoring the SIGTRAP and keeps to continue without interuption, so I was able to enter the open space, but I got the minimap/radar error (garbage image in it’s position or at least some strange looking artifacts), maybe it’s one of the reasons game is crashing. Here is the image with added pointer to the artifact (the previous time i tried it the artifacts covered whole minimap/radar) + logs (i can also post the output from it but it’s huge):

Looks like you & I are talking about the “same” bug—I didn’t see it until the update on Monday, but I’m using a newer version of the nVidia driver than you are…367.57. As you are having—I try to go anywhere from the hanger & crash…numerous people are getting the same problems & it looks to be an nVidia-related issue. It’s possible, but not 100%, you have little different output in game.log and also you have something in exceptions, which is not the case in my and John161’s case (his logs looks much more like the same problem that I have, even it could still be the same) try to run it with nvidia driver under strace (run it from commandline with command “strace -o /dev/null StarConflict” if you want to avoid huge log file from strace) and check if you can get into open space (strace will catch the SIGTRAP so it should not crash when it’s same error).

I’ll give that a go in a bit…filed a “real” bug report & the reply said to watch the forums…Skula said something about crash in linuxgate.so–I’ve asked him to clarify exactly what that is…I know it’s not a “normal” lib file on our systems…

Just did the strace run & posted it to the other thread…did not get any exceptions with the run, just game logs.

Tried today after update 1.12.2016. Not fixed, still crashing.

I reinstalled the game, tried about 1 minute ago and no change, still crashing (respective the game closes without any error) when entering open space. I didn’t try other modes because I don’t think it will be better.

The error started to appear with the update at start of november so it must be some change in the (probably graphics) code that was applied there and probably only happening with nvidia proprietary driver but I can’t get mesa driver working properly, X server refuses to start and I can’t find the source of that even I did everything from various forums to disable proprietary driver, all recommended library changes, disabling the mesa driver blocking, nothing works so I have to stick to proprietary driver - I need it  for other programs that refuse working with mesa drivers anyway.

All I found is that when I run game through gdb or strace, there is catched SIGTRAP right in the time when the game would crash while it would be ran normally and strace command allows it to run without closing but I don’t want to mess with that as it would cause other problems and I don’t want to be banned if that would cause anything on the server (even it looks as client side problem in graphics but who knows). All info about this is in my post from 24. 11. 2016 in this thread. Maybe the SIGTRAP position in the dgb output (also shown in the mentioned post) could help to find the exact call that is causing this. If you need some more examination, I could try to help you. Also, executable with full debug output could maybe help to find the source of this problem. Anyway, it must be something that was changed in the code with update between 30. 10. - 1. 11. 2016 because the game was working without any big error before the update (I think it was the same update that added Jericho r14 destroyers). Well, there was one error that was causing black particles around some ships in hangar - it was no problem in the gameplay so I didn’t care much and I even didn’t check it after the update - but that would be reason for another bug report - it is probably not related to this one even I could be wrong about it, but they are higher level ships and I was forced to stop playing because of the bug that is reported in this thread and probably also the one created by John161 otherwise I would post some info about it here later after I would start to play them.

Try to search ‘exception’ folder near logs folder and zip and attach exception content

Please read the whole post again for details about the problem includding additional information in the post from 24. 11. 2016. As I said many times before and you can see it from attached files, there are no files saved in the exceptions folder - the folder is included in the zip too to prove it’s empty. Maybe the exceptions are catched by some system logging process like syslog but I don’t know where it could be saved, I can’t find anything related in the /var/log directory too.

Keep in mind that I am trying to help you to find the source of this bug and to fix it because I am not the only one with the same problem and there is probably way more people who can’t post here due to the minimum of the required 2 finished matches in game after registration here (which is not counting matches finished through other logins like steam before account linking and it’s impossible to finish the 2 matches after that when the game is crashing everytime and they will probably not buy and install Windows just to play 2 matches for filling bug report in a game when they have otherwise fully working Linux system). And because there are no exceptions saved (at least I can’t find them in the standard locations), there must be some other way to catch the source. With gdb there is just the output that I already posted here (don’t know whether the listed address in it can help) or there is the huge output (over 200MB or 8MB zipped) from strace, but strace doesn’t stop on the SIGTRAP signal so it’s hard to find the exact position in it. I think it’s the position when the game puts NOT IMPLEMENTED into the game.log and exits with SIGTRAP, but there is missing info about WHAT isn’t implemented.

exception folder empty, hmm

Seems like the problem got fixed with the last update (or the miniupdate after it) 1.4.0c (both crashing and minimap texture problems. No more FATAL ERRORs in log, just the progressive jpeg errors (which are not causing crashes) and sometimes i get FATAL ERROR “Not all textures released” when exiting game but that has nothing to do with the bug in this thread. When other people didn’t get this fixed too, there could be another thing i did in the last week (right about in the same time when the update arrived) so it could be the other thing that helped but I don’t think so. I noticed that some game updates from steam did run steamtricks (package from repository that should help to solve some errors with games on other distros than the supported ones from steam and which was installed with one of the steam updates), but mostly there was info that it’s not required or i got message about some missing file in /var/steam* and asking for root password, which I was closing without giving password. I tried to run steamtricks manually and it wrote something about fixing broken libcrypto and openssl libraries in Steam. But I don’t think it was the thing that helped because I am running SC from the StarConflict executable, not from Steam, because from Steam it’s crashing right before the login screen appears.

Anyway, game seems to be running fine, I can now play again, join battles, enter open space and so on, no crashes within few hours of playing.
