I used the Federation Wolf gunship for a few days. It’s what made me want to grind up to T3 on the Empire gunships. I currently have a Phobos with synergy 7/9. What is to like about these turds? I’m open minded. I want to like them. What are some examples of how to have a good time with a Phobos?
Phobos is a fighter, yet it is slower than the Federation engineer frigates.
For entertainment purposes, here’s a general idea of what goes on with me and a Phobos.
Game mode starts. I watch a bunch of ally interceptors fly ahead of me and get wiped out at a beacon. I launch a missle or two and watch it hit walls or rocks. All enemy long range frigates are targeting me because cheap shots at slow ships is all they can do. In front of me, the team is wiped out. Behind me, I can go back and hang out with allied long range frigates… if no one feels like shooting guided missiles at me. Some team mates respawn. Repeat.
Combat Recon: Interceptors fly ahead of me, attempt some damage on the enemy captain, and get wiped out. I show up after them and get a ton of damage done to the captain. I’ve been lucky enough to destroy the captain twice like this. Most of the attempts were the most disappointing results ever: almost killed it, and it gets fully repaired by an engineer before anyone else finishes it off.
Imperial Gunships have more tank’n’spank in them. However, they’re godawful in T3 because they only have the Phobos. The Nukem I and the D-Eagle are Premium ships, thus forcing you to pay to fly them. And the D-Eagle is, quite literally, a mirror of the Abraham M1 in space.

Phobos is a big stepping stone from rank 7 to rank 10 or 11. Server is not available at this time for me to log in and check which ship is next. I’m ok with there being no rank 8 or 9 for it. I remember examining the stats of all > r7 Empire gunships, and it appears to be a similar experience (with more modules) over and over. If someone actually has fun flying these, I’d like to know what they’re doing.
Jasan used to fly the Phobos IIRC? So he’s the man you wanna talk to if he shows up here.
Phobos is the only T3 credit gunship for Empire and it sits at the bottom of the tier. Feds have Wolf and Wolf M which sit on middle and high ground of T3. Phobos is based on tanking (hull to be precise) while the other 2 are on speed as defense. All 3 are designed for damage (that’s what the class is for). However being a R7 instead of 8 or 9 kills it. Even the Silent Fox (fed tackler) respects it’s role better as a Rank 7 in T3 (Katana as well).
The middle and high ranked T3 fighters for empire are command ships that rely on hull and energy tanking in opposition to Jericho Katanas which are on shield and energy (energy meaning the activation of diffusion shield) - this if you plan to advance in empire T3 fighter side.
Personally i prefer the 2 types of Wolves as T3 gunships, they feel much better than the Phobos and they both have absolutely excellent bonuses (i forgot which ones the Phobos has, probably like Wolf M, IIRC all Empire gunships except the Kalah have simply damage and / or crit bonuses or specific module bonuses like cooldown or recharge, pls correct me whoever knows more about them). Wolves also get a better deal with energy usage than the Phobos.
Another aspect to look at is that R7 list of ships will give you T2-3 games while the Wolves will be for T3-4 (i suppose nothing changed here?).
EDIT: Jasan just said in another thread that ‘Phobos is the worst gunship in teh game’, there you go
Wolves are just big fat interceptors. Their survivability is less than Jericho ceptors. Fire engine overcharge and overdrive and derp around with 600 speed.
Phobos is all right. I leveled that one quickly. A good ship. Remember you get placed in mid T3 queues with it, so don’t bring any higher ships than R7 with you.
First important thing on a gunship is a weapon. Since Phobos is pretty weak and slow on it’s own, I recommend using gauss cannon for sniping exclusively. It can be very powerful. Make a crit build.
And remember, you are not at the front. You are not at the rear guard. You are coming from the side. You are the clean-up crew. You are neither the sword nor the shield. You are the hidden dagger concealed in a swordsman’s boot. You are the cheap shot. You are the killing blow.
Do not try to brawl with the frigates. You are the anti-fighter and anti-interceptor first. Stay at a safe range, use your guns range to your advantage.
Priority of targets: Target that locked on to you -> always deal with this first. If you have more than 1 lock-on, get the hell out of there. After that, it goes: gunships, tacklers, commands, covops, ecms, recons, engineers, lrfs, guards.
You should be invisible on the battlefield. Do not expose yourself too much. You are just cleaning up. You need a certain mentality and awareness when flying a slow, but powerful ship like this. If you use any other mentality than the one I described, your Phobos will be a rusted pile of junk left floating in space.

R7: Phobos. Next in line is R10: Prometheus Fire.

Nah, f*** that. After synergyzing all 3 R7 Fighters (Katana, Phobos & Silent Fox), I can guarantee you all 3 of them are fun to fly in. They’re not anything overly special, but they’re fun to fly in as they force you to think about what to do, rather than just flying willy nilly and killing and dying like moths to the fire.

Exactly. If you know what to do, you can do well with all of them. They are not broken (and they never were) like some ships without important capacitor upgrades atm. The matchmaking is doing a good job now, putting R7s in their own queue, so these ships are more than decent now.

I’m not having the same experience with matchmaking. I filled my platforms up with rank 7’s and was getting teamed with and against the same players as when I have Kite rank 9, Phobos rank 7, and Anaconda rank 8 on the platforms. The other players’ ships are the usual T3 from what I have looked at in the team lists. It could be because I select USA server often and possibly get dumped into a pool of other long-waiting players.
I am trying the Phobos the way you described earlier. It’s got a 34% crit chance now. I’ve done very little with it so far. I don’t get to take a fighter into T3 matches as often as I would if this was a T1 or T2 experiment.
Synergized Phobos as i want to get to empire commands to see how they feel, it’s so damn funny to fly around and top the final scores with a dumb R7 against T3… But the ship its self is pretty terrible tbh…

I do it all the time in a Silent Fox. Back-to-back-to-back maniacs. People act like R7’s are terrible, they’re not. Those people are just bad.

Every time I flew with them, I faced T4 ships. Not the nice kind, either, they were R11, most of the time (Nodachi A, Grizzly, etc, etc…). It was, like, 80% of the matches included, at the very least, an R10 ship.
Phobos is… xxxx. Absolute xxxx. It is the single worst ship in all of Star Conflict. Never fly it. Ever. Fly the Deimos 2 instead; it’s superior in every respect.
There are no good Phobos builds. There aren’t even any adequate ones! It’s too weak to engage targets head on; it’s too slow, even with overdrive and engine boosts active, to plant rush in Detonation or attempt a sneaky beacon cap/decap (something the Desert Eagle is really good at!); it’s not agile enough to dogfight. The only redeeming feature is “it looks quite nice.”
As a final insult, Gunships don’t even have passive abilities, so not only is it a terrible ship where you’ll struggle to land a hit, let alone get kills, but you can’t even farm passive buffs to grind through it faster!
Frigate speed is hurting the Phobos. Was fine when I last flew it trying to rank up for Prometheus. Took it out again today for a few games hoping to score a Maniac somewhere. Couldn’t do it. Too slow to move anywhere means you end up playing mobile sentry turret. Can still score kills pushing up but you end up being blown up at the end of your run.

That’s what i’m literally doing… It’s hilarious how effective this type of play can be with good positioning. Don’t have any vids to show though…
This is what i’ve been doing with the Phobos:
stuck on the ‘dark side’ of asteroids on multiple matches, having only my team’s ships in sight, was invisible to the enemy team and shot any enemy tresspassers
sitting @2.5-3k behind the front lines shooting anything attacking while making sure to have a barrier or object nearby to hide behind
picking off dangerous targets into hardcore 1v1s (maybe the only good thing the Phobos has - or at least it feels like it: turn speed and strafing, which is probably why it’s a sentry turret instead of a gunship) either dragging them to some of my teammates to finish the job or handling it myself if the target isn’t too fast or dangerous
planted a bomb in sentry mode! :what:
So basically i’ve been literally playing ‘Sentry Conflict’. Felt like a pre-alpha release of Strike Vector…
Guess we have a new class of guardian fighters…
EDIT:
Well folks, my sentry gun chronicles have just ended as i’ve hit synergy level 6. Immediately uninstalled the ship from the slot and got my beautiful Wolves and KatS back there. For some reason my DSR spiked from @ 1550 to 1640… wonderful!
Now to get cash for the Prometheus and it’s fittings…
I’ve gotten Phobos up to 4 for synergy. I was planning on getting up to 9 for the Empire gunships, since I liked DE. I’m fine with KatS, and not sure the Empire commands are superior enough to bother with the synergy grind.
I haven’t played Phobos in a couple weeks, not even PvE.
I’m synergizing them now. I’ll let you know. I’m interested if their hull tanks better than KatS’ shield. But it will take more than a week to do it. Still need missing mods.
Shields recharge, hulls don’t. That leads me to believe that Jericho’s superior. I don’t know how well mods can help with that other than the fact that some of the hull mods have additional boosts. The base resists are the same, so I imagine if it’s a 1v1 fight to the death the Empire has an advantage. That situation is only theoretical. The survivability rating is only for tanking and ignores speed or maneuverability, the KatS has a slightly faster speed. Although Prometheus X has an additional passive for shield/hull, the CPU mod could be worth it depending on gameplay.
