I used to play Descent a lot. Actually it’s the first thing I did on a computer.

descent was my first game besides wing commander 1 i played a lot
it was my first cd-rom, long before i even could read a cd-rom, coz i had no drive 
but i also had it on 12 HD 1.44MB disks, so the cdrom was mostly audio
it was the first proprietary game i played on linux, and i played all 3 parts. first two parts were brilliantly engineered.
also, D1 and D2 have directx and opengl ports with added tcp/ip (this is an ipx dos game in original with 640x480 res able to run on a intel 386 :P), and you can still play them as of today.
back then this game was _the_ pvp shooter for total 3d. you could suck in duke3d or quake in lan parties, but when it came to descent the real nerds showed the power of orientation, strafing, and how uber white quad lasers and concussion missiles on a sidewinder joystick really are…
i didnt own one, so i spent long times trying to perfect mouse and keyboard. and of course 3d orientation and map knowledge, sometimes your only way to escape
but i am not sure, if the same guys can re-do their success easily, its still probably going to be awesome what they do, but D3 already showed, that the Descent concept was great in the early days, but probably looks less out of the ordinary today.

Shoot at engines. I think it has a no dmg below 1% hull thing that you can’t even turn off with cheats ;p I forgot if you can disable the engines before that however ;p

No, you type “www.freespace2.com” in game, then hold ~ and press 0 to cycle your primary weapon forward through every single weapon available in the game ;p ~ + SHIFT + 0 to cycle back. Or just hold ~ and press K ;p
In case you don’t know the BFRed is the beam cannon used by the Sathanas and it means “Big F***ing Red” ;p

Do it with the Erynies fighter that has 8 guns, chance both to BFRed and dare to touch something. You used to be able to hold down mouse button and it would charge the beam up once per second so you’d get 8x6 BFReds (or whatever beam) at once! If you have the SCP upgrades I think they now only let it charge once until it runs out.
Also, I think I remember the vanilla game didn’t show beams properly and only shot tiny little laser things with a ton of inertia and damage. So you’d have to install the SCP upgrade.
