A: The game is a «sandbox»

How is the game a “sandbox”

Are they trying to say it will be or are they trying to say it currently is.

Opinions, Arguments (civil ones pls), Go!

Depends on how you define sandbox.

The game has no overarching railroaded plot. You do whatever you want every time you enter a battle - so in that way it is a sandbox.

Yes you are right. depending on how you define it. But for me the small little influence you have over a 10 min match just isn’t sandbox enough to be sandbox for me.

But I’m hoping they are looking foward twards sandbox i wish they had answered more about free open travel.

you can do whatever you want in the hangar

A Sandbox is a place where you can experiment freely without worrying about the consequences but the term is also used to identify open-world/free-roaming games.

What they mean is that new players have their own “sandbox” where they are matched with similar players and given special bonuses to allow them to learn the game without needing to care too much about the results at least at the beginning.

An example could be the hull/shield/damage bonus new players can get when matched with higher ranked players.

Thank you. You sound right. This must be what they had been talking about. When i read sandbox I think Sim city. Crusader kings. Etc.

You are a hero.

I really wouldn’t call the new player experience a sandbox without letting new players try out the beginner ship classes for all races for free… although they are cheap enough.

Yes that make sense but now I can see what they ment in the question that was asked. Only problem its not the question i wanted answered. But now i know what the devs qas thinking.

Of course. we should continue the conversation.

This game isn’t a sandbox game.

Sandbox games are open world with a large set universe and gameplay mechanics that allow the player to create and approach and play the game in different ways. Elder scrolls games are sandbox, Minecraft is sandbox, Dwarf Fortress is sandbox, STALKER is sandbox, Simcity is sandbox.

You could not make the claim that Star conflict is a sandbox game with a straight face, without also seriously considernig Halo, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Team Fortress 2, and a myriad of other shooters out there to be sandbox games.

This game is in essence a shooter that allows customization. This is different from being sandbox. Customization does not make something a sandbox game, it is only an element of a sandbox game. You need a number of elements together to really qualify. Perhaps Star Conflict will be developed to have those elements, time will tell. For now, it just doesn’t qualify - I could not go to someone who plays sandbox games exclusively, and sell them on this. It isn’t sandbox.

I suppose it’s what they meant indeed. Not the most lucky wording to describe it, though - unless they wanted to make a pun of all those people wanting an open-world X3 meets EvE meets Freelancer experience.

Which I hope never happen, actually - as I think game isn’t suited for it at all.

Their biggest mistake is that they use words like “sandbox” and “MMO” to advertise the game attracting wrong type of crowd and creating expectations they will never intend to meet.

This game is NOT a sandbox game. Freelancer was a sandbox game, which is close this game almost. This game is more of a MOBA in my opinion. If there was a option to play this game as a sandbox, and have open fights in space with a pvp on/off option that would be epic, and i would never quit playing. I can not wait for someone to release a Freelancer style MMO!

However, this game is REALLY fun the way it is (minus the license problem). I feel it will only get better over time and I am having a blast with it, even though it is not a sandbox!

Eve Online, is a sandbox.

Perpetuum, Is a sand box.

Planetside2, Is a sand box.

Star Conflict, Is NOT a sandbox… Yet.

There are different ways to define sandbox, as has been covered above.

By some reasonable definitions, Star Conflict is indeed a sandbox.

When they will implant the open world it will be a sandbox. Atm it’s a MOBA like WoT.

As specified earlier, a sandbox is a place where you can experiment freely without consequence. By this definition, SC is a sandbox.

Some games have added a new definition where it can also mean “open world” with games like Grand Theft Auto. Yet others have added the further stipulation that the open world be persistent - which is exactly the opposite of what a sandbox originally meant, since there are now permanent consequences to your actions.

So with two opposite meanings of the same word, it’s pretty easy for anyone to claim that it is or is not a sandbox.

You still have to pay credits to buy/unlock things before you can “try” them out.  I don’t know why anybody would call it a sandbox.

So it’s your contention that it’s only a sandbox if everything is free, including in-game currency? That’s a definition I hadn’t heard before.

A sandbox by definition is a place where your choices have real effects but you are free to make what ever choice you want within the boundary of the box.

In a “Sandbox” when you move the sand around to make a sand castle it stays there till you, someone else or time destroys it…

That’s one definition of “sandbox”. But not the only one.
