At first its development wasn’t taken seriously but after extensive computer simulations, it became obvious that the project had promise. It is said that the constructor in charge of the ship development, was inspired by a weapon, used by the Emperor’s guard.

What happened to the reactor on top? It’s in the in-game version but not here. Also, that base of the ship looks like a gun handle of sorts, could do without 
great model and texturing though!
