Another thing you could try is adjusting your mouse sensitivity/DPI. Test out different settings in a custom or PvE and see what works best for you. From what it sounds like, your mouse sensitivity/DPI may be low, so maybe try practicing with higher sensitivity so you don’t have to move your mouse as far to aim. It’ll take some practice and getting used to, but I can promise it will ultimately help.
I play on low mouse sensitivity on all ships, but i have much space for my mouse, which allows me to precise but still change the point where i shot really quick, there are also some special controls which allow your interceptor/whatever to be special.
Examples:
Controls - Free Aim, it’s usually not set, but you can set it manually and pushing the button allows you to shot missiles and MWP in any direction.
The most used control by really experienced players is following:
Turn Left / Turn Right
If you put this on a key it allows you to fly really nice circles while you can shoot at the same point, no matter what direction your ship faces as long as you hold the button, this works best with Bubbles, Shrapnel, Lasers and Plasma Gun / RF Blaster. Try it out.
That’s what really good players have bind to their keys, it allows them special moves and makes then unkillable by several bots like aliens or players with weak aim. It’s also very well to succeed in Invasion missions like kill several scouts or pirates without getting hit once, that’s what i do.
A tactic I’ve had a mixed amount of success with is to get an ambush gauss build for tacklers.
Basically, your goal is to decloak by charging the gauss, lock on, use debuffs to deny them speed and then blast the hell out of them with gauss and missiles. It’s not a perfect solution though, especially as Recon and CovOps can scrub the debuffs and utterly ruin your plan.
When flying Guard, my primary tactic for dealing with interceptors is to use torpedoes. Firing torpedoes at beacons, even stationary allies or point blank into walls can really ruin the day of any interceptor in the blast radius. Since most interceptor pilots will get right on top of their target, this kind of stunt can land you a lot of quick kills. The danger, especially when torping walls, is you’ll get caught in your own blast radius. Worse, you may misjudge and essentially hand the other guy a free kill.
So if you’re going to rely on torps, bring a friend who does the same. That way you can shoot each other with torpedoes, doing zero damage to each other while crippling enemy interceptors. When flying solo, try to get a feel for torpedo flight times and judge when to drop one. I’ve landed some really nice kills by firing them at beacons, then using long range laser fire to encourage interceptors to take cover behind the beacon, thus getting themselves insta-gibbed.
