Gunships - what do they do?

cocoon does little

Yeah, I find cocoon to be an annoyance. Plus, time a missile right, he’s toast.

I was having a discussion with a friend of mine about how he handles swarms of ships, specifically around beacons. He flies Jericho interceptors, and he likes to fly straight towards contested beacons, activate his cocoon to save himself, and ‘persuade’ the enemies to flee. I’m not sure how well that works against frigate balls, considering the rather frightening damage output. Besides, I doubt most frigate can get out of range in time (Fed engineers who aren’t that close might have a chance) so they probably would focus fire. 

In most cases, you either shoot him down on the way, or just ignore him until the cocoon ends. 2 seconds of engine and weapon shutdown are largely irrelevant to a frigate ball defending a beacon as long as their modules keep on running.

 

And after cocoon runs out, he’ll die and that’s it.

I think someone read this thread and gave it a go lol. I took the next beacon early in my engineer and this Jerry ship screams in, parks right beside me and activated cocoon. It didn’t end well for him a few seconds later.

 

This was a 1 on 1 … other ships came moments after. But I can’t help but wonder the effectiveness if 4 - 5 of these guys came in one by one and staggered their cocoons ie. constantly immobilizing frigates for 10 seconds total… would be interesting.
