Realistic Space Mode

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

i am missing a mode to with realistic Space Vacuum behavior.

Currently all Ships are flying like a Jet Plane in the Atmosphere. I understand that this behavoir may be more "intuitive" to new Players, since its that what we see Ships behave in Star Wars or Star Trek.

But there are also Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica Fans (not the old one) out there :).

Its technical not very far from what we have now in the Game.

- remove Max Speed

- remove auto break when toogling off afterburner (that will change the afterburner to a faster accelerate/ break mechanism only)

- facing direction of ship does not influence the travel direction until you give power to you engine...this will make some cool manuevers possible (for example escaping but shooting back at the enemy...)

- Projectile Speed has to be additive to travel Speed (thus should result in higher/lower Damage output to kinetic weapons relativle to the the target).

- lets see how we all crash in the next asteroid :)

I know this is more difficult and may even take some action out of the game, therefore should only be avaible at a later point in the game...not prior t3.

Since this is technical not so far from what we have now..maybe just make it an option on custom Games ?

Or another idea, if we want really pro Pilots later in the Game, maybe all T5 Battle should be done in realisitc mode, so the last "pure action" Tier would be T4. T5 would become a realistic Simulation Tier !?

Or why dont we complete dublicate all things  (think about like Diablo normal and hardcore characters are parallel). So we get an additional complete Shiptree for realistic mode to climb up.

Just to throw in some ideas...

Have Fun.

Without max speed, you still wouldnt get people going super fast because since this is realistic gravity, it will talk a long time to turn or slow down.

This idea sounds good but I dont think this game's engine is up for it.

Remove max speed?  You lost me there.  Cool idea otherwise.

Its more like piloting a Hovercraft or Helicopter, if this helps you :).

No max Speed means:

- You can accelearate indifinetly...but this will not help you because flying with 10000 meters per second will get you really fast out of the map (and think about the range you will need to brake to stop completly). Ships will still differ because of their acceleration Values (Bigger Ships accelerate slower).

I get your idea, but I think this will be too much of a change  - not only for the palyers, but for the programmers as well. I don't know if that's a desired feature.

It sounds cool, it really does. But the problem is that it will be awful gamewise. I played some years ago a board game of space combat with physic rules, vectors, and such.

And really, even if it was turnbased, it was really difficult to control the ship, and most of the time you just crossed the board from one side to another, shooting everything around you, then go out of the board, wait the next turn, and come back.

So I can't imagine how it will be with a real, fast paced arcade game. Also, imagine a Crus S without speed limit. With such acceleration and maneuverability, it would be a pain in the xxxx play it.

Most people find difficult to make simple maneuvers with the current controls so... I don't think it would be worth the programming effort to add a mode where almost nobody will play.

May be a Scenario in Game modes with unlimited respawn, but i see this more as a "pro" Mode, so think about this combined with the existing Game modes, where you only have your max 4 Ships :).

Well only a dev can answer this. But since i am a Developer myself (not for this Game)  (and i know how much i hate it, when somebody who dont know my programs tell me things are "easy"), the engine cannot be that far away from this.

In fact, if they did it right, they only have to remove some sort of luxury functions they had to implement to manuever the Ships in their current state (since the engine should already calcute the movement internally realistic this way). I programmed already myself such a space engine. The Star Control Engine already shows us, that it can handle insane Speeds (Spawn incoming, Warp Gates, Microwarp Ability). So even if this should be the Limit of the Star Engine Speed,  it should be more than enough.

But judging program engines that you do not have developed yourself is very difficult...if not impossible...

Even spacecraft have maximum speeds.  They're limited by the speed of their exhaust.  All the devs would have to do is remove automatic deceleration.  It would drastically change flight combat and increase the skill required for piloting a ship.

There is no drag in space.

There is no drag in space.

That is simplification. There is drag is space, it is just (almost always) insignificant.

"Outer space (often simply called space) is the void that exists beyond any celestial body including the Earth. It is not completely empty (i.e. a perfect vacuum), but contains a low density of particles, predominantly hydrogen plasma, as well as electromagnetic radiation, magnetic fields, and neutrinos."

But anyways drag is not the reason why there are certain (theoretical) "speed limits" in space.

Of course it was a simplification but my point still stands. In outer space you would not reach a maximum speed where thrust equals drag (let's not get into speed of light barrier here, it's not relevant for the scope of the game - what is relevant on the maps we have is gravity though since we seem to be in orbit instead of outer space).

Most of you seems to ignore that the speed of a spaceship is more dependant of the orbit it is flying than anything else. Except if you have some kind of hiper powered fusion reactor which can provide energy enough to fly whenever you want ignoring (or more accuratelly, fighting against) gravity.

Maximum speed in space at this moment is due to transfer orbit speeds, and the acceleration - decceleration capabilities of the ship engines.

For more details about it, play Orbiter sim or Kerbal Space program  :004j:
