3 Dimensional, Rotational Map

Recommended Posts

So, I really don't like looking at the map then deciding to turn left toward an objective / enemy player / captain only to realize I was upside down and turned right instead of left. I understand that this is space and there really is no upside down, left right or really any other orientation and I am a firm believer in immersing the player in this environment. I think that a fully rotatable, 3 Dimensional map would greatly improve the immersion and enable better navigation for players in a fight. Perhaps have magnification and other parameters for the map which could be set by the player and saved based on their preferences.

What I'm suggesting COULD look something like:

Maybe with some grid lines inside of it to make orientation while spinning the map easier:

In any case - I think this would a really cool and very helpful edition to Star Conflict!

I like the idea of that, would fit a lot more into the setting and make the game look more refined, but it's quite a chunk of developing to manage that....

As a temporary sollution, maybe have a variating ship marker that indicates if you're looking at the top or the bottom or side of the ship?

No it's not. With a 3D library like openGL there's nothing to code. I think it's the same with DirectX but i never coded with it.

Personally I quite like that there isn't a useful 3D map to go by, it forces you get a good sense of where everyone is by looking around rather than just staring at the map.  The 2D "top down" map is perfectly adequate.

I agree, it's ok, but it would be better with a bit more of information. Perhaps a distance information when you look around, or an altitude information in the map.

Why not vertical lines joining the ships and beacons to the horizontal plane of the map (that we could call horizon though it's not one). A bit like the radar view in fact.

As I said in other thread, knowing your position from observing the surroundings should be primary skill to learn by our brave armchair pilots.

On the other hand - if 3d map then gimme map like in Homeworld with few command options on top of it - like attack/defend markers and possibility to draw waypoints (if not for whole team then at least only for squad and myself).

I do like the idea of being able to call attention to places, although again, 2d map seems like it'd be OK for that purpose.

It's just so weird... you have all the crazy scifi stuff, stealth generators, energy syphoning systems... and then you sit in your cockpit and call up a backward 2d map on a big fat CRT screen to your right.

That's how I imagine it. :P

Given all the advanced sci-fi stuff they have, shouldn't they have a computer that can track enemy movements and fire guns automatically?  We have that kind of tech today, and yet here...

I think we should permanently take away all ships cross hairs. Aiming at enemy ships without cross hairs should be a developed skill set that our "brave armchair pilots" develop early on. Once they master the skill of aiming with-out cross hairs they'll be ready for true battle.

Is this really the kind of argument that we are taking to stunt game growth and development? Frankly it's a piss poor excuse and should not hinder actual progress in the game. If anything, adding a 3D map with notifications that can be placed, and a map UI that allows for rotation will take unskilled players' cockpit time away from them. This will allow people who are quick to interpret maps / situations to kill them while their map screen is up. Lets not stop progress simply because the player base "could do without it" or the previous, inadequate system is deemed adequate by some.

I'm often surprised how fairly innocent statement can be read as either personal attack or something soaking with sarcasm. On the other hand, I probably shouldn't be surprised - we are on gaming forums where everyone expect being attacked or ridiculed.

Back on subject - indeed aiming without cross-hairs/lock-on is quite useful skill for a pilot (especially when you try to sneak up on sniper/torpedo frigate). Same as orientation in 3D  space without horizon and projecting it properly to 2D space should be rather vital skill for someone who decide to play space combat simulators.

Having said that - I think I already mentioned  3D map a-la Homeworld with ability to create your own editable notifications/waypoints being a nice idea, no?

While aiming without cross-hairs / lock is a useful skill - you notice that the devs haven't removed those options from the game. In the same way - the skill for 3D orientation while using a 2D map should not prevent the devs from implementing a 3D map with the features you stated - that's what I was trying to state with my last post.
